A minor gripe about calling these sites "landfills"; as Mr Satish Sinha said, these are not landfills anymore, they're dump sites. Landfills have drainage systems to contain runoff and vent gasses in a safe manner, but of course once the landfill exceeds its capacity, these safety systems are no longer functional.

As an Indian, this video is a great eye opener to the hidden realties of India.
Despite the glamour surrounding progress, these side effects are a call to stop and start fixing the mistakes made in the past as such things are eventually going to affect the quality of life of the poorest citizens who have to endanger themselves to such danger for a few rupees

After watching them I can only say, that no matter how much problems are in my life they are still very less than what these people are going through.😥

I am a resident of Delhi and this is just so painful to watch. The problem is, even if every household segregate the waste(into biodegradable and other waste) the guys who pick the garbage just dump them together. I segregate them into different dustbins so that at least I can do my bit, but that just goes into vain.

I’m glad they actually showed the desperation and hopelessness, people born in those conditions have no out. It’s much the same across the world.

Good for Business Insider to show this to the public so that the people and the government can work together to solve this disgusting issue.

I hope they go through with their plan. They need to open up a recycling center and a waste center. This is insane. Nobody deserves to live like that.

This video is an eye opener which made us realise that the harm we are doing to the environment is harming the people under BPL the most. The other classes just get to read this in papers or news channels but these are the ones experiencing it and it is really sad that no one hears them out.

Atleast the government must recognise their work and provide them with proper equipment.

Now I know why doctors told us to dispose syringe/ lancets in sealed bottles before throwing it into the trash. Because it might injure the unsuspecting pickers...

Walking on that stuff without shoes is absolutely insane

Yes as an Indian I would agree with this video about the situation of trash in India . Besides developing the economy and the industry we should also work towards improving waste management. But I would also give the credit to the government for implementing various missions to make India clean and improve waste management . Although the situation has improved considerably throughout the country compared to the previous state, we still have a long way to go I hope we will get there in the next few years .

I love these videos, it makes me realize that not everything is perfect. It also brings me down to earth and get touched by the hard work these people put in. Thank you.

the first time I saw ragpickers in person was in the mid 80s in Egypt. It was just a drive by as my tour bus passed a large landfill but it was sad to see.

People keep saying how India will be a powerhouse in the future. I don't see how when they can't even handle their own trash problems.

I love how honest and straight to the point these people are.

It will also make them easier to elevate up on every opportunity for that they/the government gets.

The first time that I saw one these landfill mountains in Delhi when I was like 12-13 yrs old scarred me for life. I remember when I initially saw that I was happy that like damn, we have a mountain in Delhi as well, but as soon as I saw crows and eagles etc. hovering at the top of this thing, something straight out of a mountain in hell, I was stunned. I've never been to that area of Delhi again.
