Welcome to MooMooMath where we upload a new Math video everyday. In this video I would like to work on converting within the metric system. The beauty of the metric system is that it is based in tens, and they have base units that help you figure out what you are measuring. A couple of basic units you will need to be familiar with are kilometers, hectograms, Dekagram, base unit, and then we have deci,centi, and finally millimeters. You can remember this using, King,Henry,Died,By, Drinking, Chocolate, Milk. The base units would be meters, liters, or grams. Anything in meters it will be length, any thing in liters is volume, and anything in grams would be mass. A kilogram will be mass, a milometer will be distance.
15 meters equals how many centimeters?
What I use is put a check mark from my starting point, and an x (x marks the spot) where I'm going to. I'm going to centimeters so I will put an x over the centimeters, and you may want to put an arrow in the direction youare going. I'm moving, one,two places to the right. I will go 15 meters, and if you don't see a decimal point it is on the far right. I will add two zeros, so 15 meters equals 1500 centimeters.
Lets jump in to another one. This time lets see 35 kilograms equals how many grams?
We know since it is in grams it is measuring mass.
Lets write, king, henry, died,by,drinking,chocolate,milk
You don't need to write this every time ,but I thought it would help.
I know grams is a base, I getting ahead of myself.
Start at kilogram, check where we start from, x marks the spot where we are going to. I know the base unit is grams. I count 1,2,3 places to the right.
I will write 35, the decimal place is on the right.
I will go one,two three
35 kilograms equals 35,000 grams.
Lets go one more in the opposite direction.
25 milliliters = deciliters
I will write this down.
King,Henry Died,By Drinking Chocolate Milk
Put a check by hat is given.
We are going to deci so I will put an x
I need to go two directions to the left.
I will go one ,two so that will be .25,so 25 milliliters equals .25 deciliters

One note, the smaller prefixes are all in lower case, the bigger ones mostly in upper case. It is very important since you could easily confuse mega (M) with milli (m). Also, deca is actually "da" and deci "d". The prefixes deca and hecto are rarely used, though. The main prefixes are factor 1000 apart. It's best to look at the Wikipedia article on unit prefixes.

So from the base unit to the left is mass and to the right is distance and volume??
