It's such a small book and yet it's so intense and so excruciatingly painfull. I found myself crying at the miserable yet practical death of Gregor.

So Gregor works tirelessly in his miserable job to pay off his father's debt and also provide for his family. His father despite having saved enough money, which Gregor brought in, which could have freed Gregor of his slavery, kept it hidden. His sister and mother owned jewelry which they loved to flaunt on certain gatherings and occasions, hired maids for housekeeping, all the while Gregor sacrificed his dreams and happiness for the sake of his family. All three did nothing to help Gregor or themselves while they enjoyed life at Gregor's expense. And what now? Since Gregor suddenly turned into a beetle they treat him as if he is an intruder and tries to get rid of him. In the end they are quite relived at the dearh of Gregor.

Metamorphosis is an allegory for a family coping when one of their members transforms into an undesirable or useless member of society -- whether that means they become an addict, a political or religious extremist or minority, are badly injured or disfigured, gain a serious mental illness, develop personality traits or defects that no one can easily cope with, or become a person of interest to the authorities because of something they did, didn't do, or because of something that they are.

I know that Kafka used Gregor's transformation into a bug so that it would be seen as repulsive to the reader and more understandable that the family reacted negatively to him, but I love all living creatures and the descriptions of his little legs trying so hard to get away as his father was chasing after him nearly broke me. So many times the descriptions of him hiding under the blankets, full of garbage and dust made me want to just swoop in and grab him and clean him up/pet him. I can't be the only one that felt that way. I thought Gregor was described ironically as pretty cute and it's so sad he was treated like that before his death. RIP Gregor.

This depressed me so much. Dying and being forgotten, or being called a burden is one of my biggest fears. I wish I I could've just read it and did the work for class but I felt it so much smh

it’s really sad to me that they just stopped caring about him completely, but then it made me think, maybe they only cared about him when he could provide for them, since the situation was opposite, they had to care for him, he ended up dying bc he was the most sympathetic one of them all. great story, but sad.

Even my grandfather had a similar story.

He worked hard and built three houses, he was a teacher. When he became old, he supported himself and family with pension. He had three daughters.

Suddenly one day he had stroke and his daughters were looking after him well.
After 2 months they gradually skipped his physiotherapy exercises. After 5 months they weren't helping in any exercise. He lost all the ability to even sit.

One day he became unconscious, he was admitted to the hospital. He was fed through pipe in the nose. After 4 days he passed.

But even now after 2 year when they discuss about him, they just talk about his pension loss and how he could have built one more house.

I was living in another city doing graduation, I just visited from time to time. I warned them not to stop physiotherapy, but they did. I just feel sad now.

That was a dark sad ending, also screw Gregor’s family.
Wasn’t Gregor a cockroach not a lady bug?

Kafka said the Metamorphosis should never be illustrated and would not allow an insect put on the cover of the book.

This book helped me exponentially in an odd way. I worked myself nearly to death for my family business. I received less than legal wages, built the structure, did the landscaping, didn’t miss a single day of work for years & co managed it for 2 years after my mother became ill. Eventually I decided to go to school to try getting my degree, but alas, the business almost went under & my family relied on me to pick up exponentially more work. I eventually lost 30 pounds due to stress, lost all my finances & was admitted in the hospital for a short while. I feel this book.

It is even more mournful when one realizes that him becoming a cockroach represents the author being diagnosed with tuberculosis.

What an excellent summary. It hit all the main plot points and I appreciate the animated illustrations too. Thank you. Great work!

The way Kafka was writing is very intriguing to me. His writing is very simple and seems easy to understand but every word, action, place and figure has a deeper meaning you have to unveil.

The nicest people are mostly treated in a bad way and no one appreciate their help and positivity and as long as they stop giving they get hated on and get isolated..

Also it can be interpreted that Grete, the daughter experiences through a metamorphosis especially at the final part of the parents noticing her being a beautiful young woman who should be seeking a husband now.

As a psychiatrist, I'm simply amazed at the extraordinary profundity of Kafka's psychoanalytic prowess. The novel is certainly, at least in part, a reflection of the writer's own life. Gregor's predicament is a personification of the Kafka's own troubled life portrayed with such masterful skill that one can't choose but only marvel at it.

For me it focuses on alienation. Gregor Samson in not only physically alienated in his situation but also alienated in his true nature. One part that suggests that Gregor Samson is alienated is when he saw himself change into monstrous bug, even in that situation he needs to go to his work and take the train. That is, society pushing him to follow the vicious cycle of life leaving the true and genuine things Gregor have.

It's a metaphor, actually Kafka stated that Gregor had been a failure at work and he became a jobless person or probably he lost his physical ability to do any sort of work means he had no access to earning money thus he became an unbearable creature, not even a considerable human to his family. There's no such fixed explanation or reference but this theory is quite plausible, I guess

My view of the book is that the Metamorphosis of Gregor Zamza is the mental state of Franz Kafka himself in relationship with his family especially with his father. Kafka felt like he was a bug and deserved to be crushed. What makes this novel so unique and timeless is that maybe we can feel like Gregor in our lives, so meaningless, so powerless. Thank you Max Brod that the world is able to read Kafka and this masterpiece.
