Reminds me a story my grandma told me of when she was teaching in Muslim Mindanao (Philippines) in the late 40s. One of the student had another young girl that sat by her feet. The young girl took the notes, did the recitations and answered for the girl sat at the desk when she was addressed. The unusual situation made my grandma call for the girl's parents. When the mother turned up, she arrived with an entourage that included armed men. Turns out that the lady was a 'Sultana' (Muslim queen) and the girl was a princess with her personal servant. When my grandma asked why she would not respond to her, the teacher. The response: 'You are a commoner and not of our people, why do you think you deserve a direct response from a princess?'.😅😅 When my grandma asked how she can learn anything this way. Response: 'A daughter of the Sultan has no need to learn what you have to teach. She can read and recite the Qur'an.'. When my grandma in frustration asked: 'Then why is she here?!'. Response:'Its not good for commoners to think that the princess is uneducated in modern things.'😂😂😂. The sultana before leaving consoled my grandma: 'Don't worry, youre doing fine, the servant girl is learning well. She will have more need for what you teach.'. 😂😂😂 She was flabbergasted but hey. The princess herself did not finish the school year, she was married off. Her servant girl was crying on the last day, she didnt want to stop school... A favourite story of my Nan told over and over.
