Did Putin's Army Obey His Ceasefire Order?
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his forces in Ukraine to observe a unilateral, 36-hour cease-fire, for the Orthodox Christmas. The Russian leader announced that the Kremlin's troops would pause fighting after the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, proposed it.
But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly address on Saturday that the Russian military was continuing to strike Ukrainian positions despite their declared ceasefire.
SOT "Today the world was once again able to see how false any words of any level coming from Moscow are. They said something about an alleged ceasefire. But the reality is Russian shells again hit Bakhmut and other Ukrainian positions.”
Russia's Defense Ministry insisted that its forces were observing the Kremlin-ordered truce, and only returned fire when attacked.
SOT "Russian troops in the area of the special military operation have been observing the ceasefire regime along the entire line of contact since 12 noon Moscow time on 6 January," Konashenkov said.
The Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas on the 7 January. The cease-fire was due to end on Saturday night - at midnight Moscow time.
