GT Media ATSC 3.0 TV Tuner Stick for TVs and Smartphones Review

In this video I review the GT Media ATSC 3.0 TV tuner stick. It currently works with Android devices including a smartphone, tablet, Android TV box, and Smart TV. The company claims it might be work with other devices in the future like a Roku TV. For the low $60 price, how well does it work for ATSC 3.0 and does it decode DRM encrypted channels?

UPDATE: The stuttering issue is 100% from the Android TV box GT Media supplied and NOT the TV tuner stick. Lon Seidman reviewed the unit and didn't have the stuttering issue on his Onn Android TV Box. See video below:

💯agree with you about that stupid DRM encryption. The FCC needs to put a stop this nonsense and until it does, ATSC 3.0 ain't going to work at all.

Once again Tyler, you rock - thanks for up to date great info on this topic, and your sensitivity toward the budget limitations of a large audience of cord cutters. 👏

Thanks for the review. It sounds like this device needs more work before most folks can use it for viewing on a TV. That DRM encryption would be a deal breaker, even if they eliminated the choppy signal issue.

this is where the fcc needs to step in and tell the networks you will broadcast the 3.0 signal unencrypted or you won't broadcast it at all

I really don't understand why I enjoy your videos so much.

Hi Tyler. I just obtained the GT Media
HD ATSC 3.0 Stick, and it works well.
With my best indoor-outdoor antenna
I am able to receive 85 channels here,
about 30 miles NW of Boston, in Southern NH. This is about the best I
have been able to receive with ATSC
HD TV. The only channels I am unable
to receive is Channel 9, WMUR, about
20 miles north of here near Manchester
I think because, even though I am
fairly close, it is north over hilly terrain.
I only have received it in the past with
an antenna outdoors, aimed at it.
I have not tried the.DVR feature yet.
It works well on my Android phone
and Android tablet.
A few primary network DRM channels
are locked out. The notice states that
the current app is not able to receive
DRM channels. Thanks 😊 Ray, NH

Fine-tuning the signal on the phone, that's a great idea and great use case!! Im liking the design on the atsc dongles for HDMI. Rather than USB. However I wish they supported Qam channels for my home tv network. Also, it would be even better if it older TV's with component input, or VGA. But with a sharp hdmi to component adapter, you don't need power, however it doesn't scale the video so the device needs to have all lower resolutions from 240p-1080p especially the interlace resolutions in order to be versatile to older displays. And also have a remote that can be used as an app in one remote to be seamless.

I got one of these on the strength of your review. Very happy with it as long as it is paired with a decent antenna. In my area, no rabbit ears need apply.
The first thing that really interested me was the ability to use it as a signal strength meter for aiming my antenna. I may finally be able to get the local VHF high PBS station that totally disappeared after the latest repack. The second is as you said, it is cheap enough to play with 3.0 as a hobbyist.
I got more channels with a small outdoor antenna balanced on the back of a rocking chair in my living room than I have with the same model antenna mounted outdoors going into my TV set. Now all I need is an Android box so I can use this with my Fire TVs.
Thanks for reviewing this gadget!

Thanks for this video. I was going to buy a TV tuner, but then I found out about the DRM issue from you, and found out that all of the channels I'd want to watch are DRM encrypted in my area. I guess I'll just be ditching my TV completely and solely using streaming services because they don't want my viewership or any ad revenue they can get from me.

Been hoping for a Review on this Tuner.Although i found out a lot about it by visiting the Company's Forum.
They make some of the BEST FTA Sat Receivers on the markit! And Sat Finder/Tuner with LCD Display...

Thanks for showing this dongle. Even if it does not pick up encrypted channels, it is still cool. No 3.0 stations in my area, though.

I think this stick has potential if these initial hiccups can be fixed with updates

You are spot on about the FCC not doing anything

Tyler, don't stop preaching about DRM encryption. It's a tool that will surely by used in an anti-consumer manner. We should not be blocked from watching content on the public airwaves.
