India on Fire: Dealing with the heatwave crisis

This year, heatwaves have wreaked havoc around the globe. India has not been spared from extreme heat. Slums are ablaze, water is running dry, and heatstroke and dehydration are common ailments.

In recent months, India has been facing unprecedented heat. In New Delhi and parts of Northwestern India, temperatures have been up to ten degrees hotter than usual. Bablu Kumar works as a rickshaw driver in New Delhi. 'I have never experienced such hot days in my life', says Kumar. Like many of the poorest in New Delhi, the heat is impacting him disproportionately: the hotter weather means he must take more work breaks, which in turn impacts his income. Meanwhile, the city is ablaze - with fires caused by electrical overloads, from increased use of air conditioning. Firefighters like Niti Lohchab now receive dozens of calls each day. 'What if something happens to me? Who will take care of my daughter?', asks Lohchab, who has witnessed the deadly impact of house fires first hand. As the sun beats down on New Delhi, water shortages have become the norm - resulting in dehydration.' We don’t get enough water. We can't afford to buy it either. When there’s a shortage of water, there are fights between families', says Delhi resident Ajhmool Sheikh.

Nitin Lohchab is a heroic man who is passionate about his "dream job" despite nightmarish and literally hellish conditions. May God bless and spare him and may he get a big raise!

That firefighter whom is a father is a hero. He brought a lump to my throat you can really tell how much he cares about people. I pray for his safety and his co-workers and India to be more green and cooler.

Did I just see a man who neighbors baby is crying help her console that baby? That's such love. It's heartwarming.

Increasing the tree canopy coverage by ten fold or more, growing climbing plants on building façades accross the city could effectively decrease the air temperature by 5 to 10 celsius degree in summer.

This might be unpopular but I'll say it either way:
From the movie, I've seen too many people and very few trees living in Indian cities. This should be changed by consciously planting living trees, not painting the roof white!!! Forests regulate the microclimate by reducing temperatures and attracting more rainfalls.
So, people, please do something before the beautiful Indian tropical land transforms into a desert instead of a magnificent forests that once were there! 🙏

The hottest temp I've ever been in was in Delhi, first week of June, 1977 - 40C. I could barely function. Can't imagine 50. It's surprising people don't just drop dead from heart failure in that.

I am thankful to live in a country where the temp during the summer here is about 20-25 celsius and not more!

Really admire the rickshaw driver. He seems to be willing to do anything to take care of his family, even at the expense of his own health and well being

It's about 33C where I am and I feel like I am dying after a few minutes in the sun. I can't imagine how these people deal with such high temps day after day 🥵

Is shocking how living beings just adapt to their environment, no matter how crazy and un healthy, it might be.

There are studies that show some kind of connection between increase crime rates and higher heat/temps. It’s scary to think something like the climate can impact our very behaviors.

Imagine taking a shit on the sidewalk and it starts cooking from the heat of the dirt before you've even finished wiping with your bare hand
