He just wants opportunities to showcase his intelligence in more creative and free-flowing ways, even though he struggles academically.

He resents the fact that the school severely restricts his opportunities to show his intellectual prowess, hence why he rebels by getting up to mischief and defying the authority of the teachers, especially Skinner and Krabappel
