I've always liked to think that Katsumata and Fukubei were somehow the same person. Throughout the story, they always mention Katsumata as a living memory, while at the beginning, when everyone meets again, nobody remembers Fukubei. It's almost as if Katsumata, after the trauma shown in 21CB, had created a version of himself that he liked, a version that was less impulsive and made things work his way. This would explain why when the friend "revived" he came back acting in a different way, much less calculated and much more impulsive, because supposedly Fukubei "died" in Katsumata's own head.

Underrated. Most battles Ive seen that includes Friend is always Katsumata (with the iconic friend mask) rather than Fukubei (with the Ninja Hattori kun mask).

Most people are saying that it was Katsumata behind all of this all the time (they are right ) but it was said by Kanna's Mother that Friend was Fukubei from the beginning. When Fukubei(Friend 1) died then Katsumata took Fukubei's identity and started to create more disaster but Katsumata was the real friend . Hope this helps

Im pretty sure the ending implies katsumata was always the friend, and that fukube actually died as a child during 'the lie of 1971'

The perfect ending was made just for the movies. So much so that fitting into the story, it doesn't make any sense. Since who would be the Friend that Yamani killed in chapter 133? Katsumada, it wasn't, but Hattori. So, in the original there are indeed two Friends, Hattori and later Katsumada.

Detective Cho's investigation proved that Friend was more than one person. He managed to get Fukubei's data and the data of "Sadakiyo's friend" that he referred to as "another person beside Hattori" with an arrow pointing to the next page showing that Fukubei's data was different from Katsumata's data. Hattori is the real name. Yamane said, "It was Hattori, also known as Fukubei." Based on Detective Cho's investigation records, it shows that the only nickname is Fukubei. Kiriko's memories from middle school also show Fukubei together with a masked figure other than Sadakiyo. Everything proves that Katsumata and Fukubei are two different individuals. In line with Kenji's statement in the perfect ending that should be taken literally. TBH, creating a theory that contradicts the final explanation is wild, but that's your right. I'm just trying to help you out here. Lastly, Kanna does have powers. She once blew up a car in the real world out of shock after finding out Friend was her father.

I think Hattori is smarter and better in overall thinking but Katsumata is more creative and is better at planning

For me fukubei is more like the known person and the main guy. While katsumata actually kind of adapts more with the friend role
