So just to clarify, i didn't feel like this video was me defending anyone. I more just ignored the whole question around ethics and focused on the business impact of this, which i do believe will be zero. Continue isn't sueing PearAI or YC at this point, and I doubt they will.

Now, obviously this whole thing is an ethically gray area. I don't know all of these details, but lets be honest. If we were Continue, we wouldn't want someone to start a company based on our open source work. That said, it's a bit ironic that Cursor is doing the same thing to VSCode.

Since I know the founders in this case, I understand why people may think i'm biased. That's why I tried to ignore the ethics discussion.

For the sake of accuracy: the PearAI editor is a fork of VSCode and the PearAI coding assistant (they call it pearai-submodule) is a fork of Continue (which is an extension similar to Copilot.)

These founders in particular are extremely unlikable. This is peak San Francisco vibe.

This is peak "tech bro" vibe. Makes saying I work in tech embarrassing (this sort of stuff).

One way or another, everyone in the industry is building on top of open-source. However, the issue with PearAI seems to be how they handle criticism. It's also funny that they actually have a commit where they changed every instance of 'continue' to 'PearAI.'

As an aside.
AI code editors make you worse at coding.
The junior Devs at my company can't even do basic programming in anything without an llm integrated.

Really disappointed in you defending them just because one of the cofounders is your friend. Continue is mad at them for a reason and it isn’t over just licensing. Look at the commit history. They basically did 0 work, didn’t disclose to YC that they copied another YC company, and got $1 million for a product that’s effectively competing with Continue. No self-respecting developer would pay these grifters any money.

The problem is clearly that you're using light mode twitter. Try dark mode.

Remember when Pan was making videos about how he was just trying to switch into CS, grind leetcode, and get an internship? Pepperidge farm remembers.

Been doing tech for pay for 36 years now. Up to waiting two years+ before bothering to take any "new! shiny!" seriously enough to start learning or using it. Saves me a lot of time, and money, that would have been spent on fads, on first-system fails, on hype-ware.

What i took away from this: frying pan is a clown and a scammer.

Are you really defending someone who literally forked an open source project, did zero work on it, and started selling it with an illegal license? These grifters are not software developers, please do not support them. I get that it's your friend so you can't be impartial, but you need to seriously consider who you are keeping company if it affects your judgement this badly.

This dude is doing PR damage control for them. 😂 He's really comparing them to Steve Jobs, Gates and Linux. Bruh

Dude that's not you. You literally have a bias towards to the guy. It is not coincidence that lots of people thinks the same way for them and even also you (the damage control thing)

If something is free, it doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want with it. Respect the developers and the original license, otherwise it is indeed stealing. Not sure how this can be "out of context".

Umm. Disagree on this one. It is unethical action. I think you're kinda bias on this one. Founders didnt know anything about open source ecosystem, and that's why it aligned with YC. They are both in bad actors just solely focus in profits.

I remember the mock interview you did with him. The kind of guy that I wouldn't want as a colleague, nor a manager, nor anything. But if this profile can create value out of pride and cockiness, why not.

These poor kids are going to get license trolled out of existence if they don't learn about OSS attribution.
