Why did this happen? Harvesting Honey. Today finds our beekeeper on the homestead to harvest the honey from the beehive and finds an unexpected surprise. I am slowly learning beekeeping skills as we have been keeping bees on the homestead for the last two years.

About Us.
I share our organically managed homestead, called Byther Farm, with my loving partner, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
There is a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
I'm currently exploring permaculture farming as a way of life.
We keep chickens, Aylesbury ducks, Khaki Campbell ducks and turkeys.

Mmmm honey! 😋I must have missed the episode of when the hive was brought to your garden. I'm going to go look thru your videos. Your very own working honey bees, how Wonderful! Scary too, no?! Especially sense you will now be doing the harvesting. Thank you for sharing!😉❤️️

I watch a couple bee keeping channels and they seem so worried about them all the time. Inspections! Marking! Mites! Mold! Cups! Swarms! Fondant! More mites! Gasp! hive keeping seems so chill and enjoyable. I didn’t even know you kept bees!

I hope to use the honey in cooking and learn some new dishes, what is your favourite dish that uses honey?

Bees really are opportunists when it comes to their 'homes'. If we don't fill our supers with frames, say 9 instead of 10, they'll make wider comb that's harder to get out and quite heavy to lift. And wow, do they love to seal everything with sticky propolis. I highly recommend a proper bee suit, proper gloves and a frame lifter. Some years the bees are easy to work with, some years they're really aggressive, so best to be prepared, including having a good remedy for stings. I got stung on the finger yesterday lifting a frame to extract because I didn't notice the worker on the other side who'd slipped indoors. The lifter is now my constant companion. Most of our honey becomes fruit flavoured mead, lovely stuff.

That was so good. Wow, do let us know how your honey tastes. Thanks for a really interesting video. The bees must love your garden all those flowers they've pollinated💟🐝🐝🐝🐝

one of our local customs is that you must always tell the bees all the news. I've quite a few friends who have bees in their house. The old houses are stone built with rubble walls and bees seem to like them, so when you have local news, you pop out and tell them. One farm I used to visit had a hive in the kitchen ceiling, they'd been there for 70 years and no one ever got stung, and when it was finally removed, it weighed a ton and the only reason it was moved was because the rats got in. Beekeeping is now quite popular and we have more and more local honey in the shops

We don't put an inner cover between our brood box and honey supers here in the USA, but I have seen them do the same thing in a honey super when they run out of room. I think your hive was honey bound so the queen didn't have enough room to lay in to build up the hive. I would have had to take at least one bite of that beautiful comb. yum yum.

Liz how is your beehive atm? Did the colony survive winter? I have two hives and checked them last weekend. The queens are laying and bees are busy bringing pollen in in this sunshine. Hope you enjoy being a beekeeper

That looks like a lot of honey from a small amount if bee's. Hope you like the taste as it will reflect the flower pollen around you.

Liz, my hive did the same thing. We pulled a whole pound of honey just from the wax between the frames and the top.

Bur comb is a pain Liz but at least you got a harvest out of it

Those are nice quiet bees you have Liz!
Didn't those guys just put an empty super back on top of the brood box? I didn't see any frames in it at all when they closed it up.
