I'm here early so I'll point out the reason Geralt's moves are so flowy and complicated and dance-like is because in the books, Witcher fighting styles(primarily the wolf school Geralt is from) are based off of dancing as they often fight hordes of monsters at once or very large creatures so their attacks have to be effective in as many directions as possible, as often as possible. So all the spins and twirls are basically so Geralt can hit multiple creatures or multiple parts of a creature at once. And a Witcher can pull it off because they're superhuman and can handle all the exertion of that type of fighting as well as having the speed and precision to make spinning a viable strategy in a fight.

"Wrong... pirouette... *sigh* Wrong, footwork!"
His fighting is kind of like dancing, they literally train how to pirouette.

Would love to see these guys try to recreate some of the moves in Ghost of Tsushima!

Let's not forget that Geralt of Rivia had almost 90 or even 100 years of practice, so this is how he does his moves so well.

One thing I noticed is that the Witchers fighting style focuses completely on pirouettes and spins because he has to constantly avoid monster attacks. I wonder if the power of his strikes comes from the spin itself or if the spinning is purely evasive and to keep him mobile. Very cool to see people trying out his style !

Hey! I have created and performed the witchers fighting moves in The Witcher game series. As Andrzej Sapkowski (author and creator of The Witcher universe) described in the books, pirouettes were the witchers fighting style significant elements. That's why they are so commonly used in the game choreography. Whenever you analyse video game moves you have to keep in mind that the final animation is not only the actors performance, but also game designers and animators vision, serving a visual purpose or covering some gameplay mechanics.
You guys did a great job breaking it down. I'm honoured and hope you enjoyed it! :)

Omg it's the Taishi, the guilty samurai! I had no idea he's still working as an actor in the US. Good to see him doing well.

The thing about Geralt's fighting style is that, lorewise, if the sword stops moving in the Witcher's hand, the fight is either in a point where he can rest or is just straight up done.

For the spinning, doesn't make sense in real combat but I think in the Witcher, Geralt said when a witcher is fighting it's like a dance. I can't remember the exact quote but I'm pretty sure it was stated somewhere in one of the games
