I like clean cooking surfaces, period. Nothing that could harbour a bit of dust or grease. No bacteria farms in the kitchen. I’d suggest that changing or increasing the lighting is magic. I can power off the strong lights and keep low ambient and focused light for other times. However, even small kitchens can have zones for different uses. I have my binders and a printer in one place and I prep on the opposite side.

My (very) personal opinion, though, is that items should be consciously staged but not look obviously staged. So many vignettes designed to look like still-lifes come off as contrived. I have seen home and garden type magazines with photos of lemons artfully sprinkled on stairs, carefully arranged fruits in bowls with just the right amount of grapes drooping over the side, coffee table books stacked in perfect concentricity, books that have obviously never been read arranged by both color and size in bookcases, etc. Layering things in places where they don't logically belong just for the sake of layering comes off as fake. I would say that staging is both art and science.

I have a working kitchen, not a display space.

Staging is for selling dead people's leftovers in the house that's now on the market or just sold. Practicality demands order, not vignettes...unless you own museum quality items of every category and give private tours of your home.
