NASA ON AAM - STRATEGY 1 (REGULATIONS)....
NASA published the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Market Report in 2018 and estimated a $500 billion market in maturity.
It spelt out 3 strategies - the FIRST and MOST important being the conformity to FAA regulations.
UAM or AAM for manned operations can be classified into 2 markets: commercial and private/sports/recreational with different certification and compliance rules
For commercial passenger applications (example: air shuttles, air taxis), FAA has classified such air vehicle or eVTOL as special class of powered-lift aircraft under Part 21.17(b) , with Part 23 & Part 33 for engines, Part 35 for propellers, and Part 27 & part 29 for rotocraft. And the manufacturer has to work with FAA on the certification plan.
