Orbital rocket vs a moon rocket, what a fair comparison
thomasDH
Neither, they both have their own individual uses.
Edit: damn bro I didn’t mean to start a war. I think my point should have been that they’re too different to even meaningfully compare.

Me: Bruh they have 2 different purposes-

SLS is designed to carry Orion, crew, & Lunar Gateway parts to Lunar Orbit, while FH is designed to launch lighter interplanetary payloads.

The maximum velocity is wrong, and it makes no sense for rockets anyway. If that would be the actual maximum velocity, then SLS could not bring Orion to the moon and Falcon heavy not the Tesla Roadster into an orbit around the sun.
There is no drag in space, so a rocket just keeps on accelerating until it runs out of fuel. But because of F= m*a the final velocity depends on the payload. And about 28000 km/h that I'd mentioned here for both is just orbital velocity, so the speed that I'd necessary to bring something into low earth orbit. You need higher speeds for higher orbit or even leaving earth.
So with rockets you don't give the maximum velocity as a stat, but instead:
-max payload to low earth orbit
-max payload to geo transfer orbit
- max payload to the moon
-etc.

Damn, I can't believe you missed that perfect opportunity for a little word-play at the end. "You definitely want to choose the falcon heavy, if your checking account is getting a little light".

remember, rockets are not cars or trains. they cant be compared in the traditional way and some cant be compared at all. this is a prime example

Wow it's so damn cool to compare SpaceX and Nasa that are friends from 2006
EmilioGameair
Is not a fair comparison nor they are in the same weight class. You are comparing these rockets against the wrong competitor. What you should do instead is to establish a fair comparison like this ….👇
Boeing’s *SLS* compared to SpaceX’s *Starship*

You can launch Falcon Heavy over 20 times for the same price as one SLS launch. This means that Falcon Heavy can actually put more payloads into orbit than SLS for the same price.
krist
Falcon Heavy is way more practical. Thanks Elon!
MATTNMEMPHIS
Good luck reaching the moon with a falcon heavy 😂

This is like comparing a Toyota to a Lambo.
These rockets have two different purposes.

Falcon Heavy looks cooler so I'll pick Falcon Heavy.

Private industry beats government agency every time all the time.

The solid rocket boosters are typically recoverable and reusable for rockets with such configurations. Are you sure?

Only thing in SLS hands is if your payload is a single piece that weights more than 65tons. If there is ANY WAY to cut it into pieces that are 60 tons or less, then you could launch 10 times as much into orbit. You could literally blast 600tons of payload into orbit and still be cheaper than going with a single 90ton LEO blast.
