Pretty sure the lime is there because, like most psychoactives, arecoline is an alkaloid and its solubility changes with pH. Under acidic conditions, it's in its salt form and hydrophilic. Under alkaline conditions, it's a lipophilic freebase. The lipophilic form is able to cross the cell membrane and get to the bloodstream, but the hydrophilic form stays mostly in the saliva.

Got well acquainted with a Filipino man when I drove buses in the army. He worked at the depot as a DoD employee. I had a huge dip in one time while we were cleaning up the bus, and he said, "you should try this betel nut my friend." I had never heard of it but said "fuck it ill give it a go." He pulled out a huge leaf and pulled out his nasty-lookin ziploc bag full of betel. Wrapped it in the leaf, handed it to me and said, "chew it softly and leave it in your lip like your tobacco, and good luck 😃"

Holy fuck was it a rush, but i will never do it again. Shit also stains your teeth real bad. I miss you Mr. Filipino Man 😢

I have a betel nut palm tree in my yard. The landscaper asked me if he could pick it. I let him whenever he wants. He prepared one for me, and he used tobacco leaf. It was awful and made me super dizzy. You need to chew it longer. 1st and last time, I'll do betelnut. 🤙🏼

"Drug nerd" is a good way to put it. From the time I was 15 I had a blast just reading erowid reports and things like that.

The most reckless thing here is using a random leaf to prepare it in. There's a lot of very dangerous plants growing in our gardens.

"So this is flavoring it?"

Very good video.
I was in Vietnam in 1968 in the USAF.
There were a few Vietnamese with dark red teeth. It was the first time I heard of betel nut.
I had no idea about the actual process.
Thank you!

For Indians, Specially Bengalis, Assamese a betel quid is like a mouth freshener used after every meal.

Best sponsor spot ever. The way you covered the features was so compelling I sent this to my husband snd told him to subscribe because it's perfect for him.

The leaf you used is Hydrangea arborescens, not a Rhododendron. The serrated, dull leaves and flower structure are a dead giveaway. Rhododendrons have waxy glossy leaves with smooth edges and have a vastly different flower structure. Im sure someone has already commented this, but figured Id post just in case (didnt skip through your 1st ever ad btw, CONGRATS!)

EDIT: Hydrangea @ 2:00

"Oh holy fuck, this is a drug" is such a hilarious phrase outside of this very specific context

Just found your channel today, very appreciated. If by some chance no one has said it so far, Robert Evans (host of Behind the bastards) wrote a book called The History of Vice which would be up your alley

I don’t know how you feel about it, but I saw that you put a lot of effort into the last video, flying out and everything. I see you, don’t beat yourself up over it not getting as much views as it could have if you are. Keep up the good work!

Thank you GROUND NEWS. Support this guy. I signed up for Ground News today BECAUSE you supported this guy. I always learn something from Metta's videos. Kind of rare for me at 60 years old.
