President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy says to U.S. lawmakers that Ukraine “will never surrender” during a joint session of Congress in Washington.
President Joe Biden has welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the White House on his first known visit outside of Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion of the country in February.
Biden and Zelenskyy, who arrived earlier Wednesday, are to hold talks at the White House before the Ukrainian leader addresses a joint meeting of Congress in the evening.
A senior administration official told reporters the talks between the two leaders would include “an in-depth strategic discussion on the way ahead on the battlefield,” what equipment and training the U.S. and other allies could provide, as well as economic, energy and humanitarian aid.
“President Biden will have the opportunity to reinforce that this support is not just about what we have done before, but what we will do today and what we will continue to do for as long as it takes,” the official said.
While Zelenskyy is not known to have left Ukraine before, he has made visits outside of the capital, Kyiv, including going Tuesday to the eastern city of Bakhmut where his forces have been engaged in heavy fighting.
