I don't know of all of the forces involved or the ratios, but if I was an ethic Russian, while there might be some language differences with the Ukrainians, having essentually the same religion, largely the same culture and being biologically the same people, but having more freedom as a Ukrainian citizen, I would choose Ukraine. If Putin is right that Ukraine isn't really a separate group of people, then the slavic people have a choice, they can chose to live in Russia or chose to live in Ukraine. But if Putin has both of them, there is no choice.

I think there will be pleasant surprises as Donbas is liberated. But there will be other stories as well. And then what to do with them? It is called winning the peace after the war is over. Many hardliners will need to immigrate to russia. And make no mistake, some in the world will condemn it. But I see no way out & whatever peace is made with russia will need to include taking these people in. One of the many thing Ukraine will have to deal with as it becomes whole again.

There is much more concrete evidence of support for Ukraine in Donbas. Two studies done in 2015 and recognized by the UN showed support for remaining as part of Ukraine in both Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts to be over 80%. This was one year after Russia took over Crimea so this showed a strong desire amongst even ethnic Russians to stay as citizens of Ukraine.
