Benjamin Britten was a 20th century English composer, conductor, and pianist. This song is part of Britten’s collection “Friday Afternoons” (yes I know today’s Thursday not Friday, apologize to your OCD for me😉) They were written for young students learning to sing at the school in Wales where Britten’s brother was headmaster. The title came from the day and hour the singing class met during the week.
.
The lyrics to “Cuckoo” were written by poet Jane Taylor; British like Britten, but born over a hundred years before him. She also wrote the lyrics to “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” which I just learned when I started researching this song ten minutes ago!⭐️

I first heard “Cuckoo” in the movie Moonrise Kingdom, and it has basically been stuck in my head ever since. I love how an extremely simple framework and melody can create such depth and beauty. I hope you enjoy it🌱 Have a great day and thank you for listening!🕊🌻
