The same goes for movies. I used to watch increasingly scarier and more horrifying horror films. Until one night during the beginning of lockdowns I watched one so unnerving that it made me literally vomit. It was then that I realized how much I was being affected in real life by what I was viewing.

I was incredibly anxious and always afraid of what could possibly happen. My dreams, even though were not outright terrifying, left with such a feeling of dread that I would end up with an anxiety attack at some point in the day.

Every now and then I feel the temptation to watch a scary movie, but I remember how it affects me and I just cannot anymore. I try not to watch TV at all anymore.

Be careful little ear what you hear. Be careful little eye what you see.

To comment on the "church music" discussion: I believe there's a different standard for music played in church and for music that Christians should listen to. "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" nursery rhyme clearly isn't something to sing in church, but that doesn't mean it's sinful for Christians to listen to/sing it at other times. "Would you play it at church?" is an overly simplistic rubric that can rob us of daily joy and lead to legalism.

When I was an unbeliever I went to metal shows quite frequently. Never had any interest in God. Around those times, I went to a show where a Christian metal band played and witnessed to the crowd for Christ. I didn’t become a believer until years later, but I never forgot that moment and consider it one of the moments Gods seed took root in my heart.

Long story short, Christian metal can and does glorify God. Yet, believers need to use discernment on what type of metal they listen to.

A lot of Christian metal I've heard has been about spiritual warfare. The sound fits.

Most Christian metal have way better theology than the majority of contemporary Christian music out there. I'm all in on the majority of Christian metal bands. No offense Todd. You are right though, we must use discernment on everything we listen to.

As someone who has been creating music for years I realize that every minor sounding song which is what we associate with sounding melancholy, is technically just a major in a different key. Further, a lot of metal is inspired by classical music, particularly at the most technical levels. Music is a tool given to us by God, and as with all tools, it’s how it’s used. I’m never going to buy into the concept that the amount of tube saturation and warmth added to an input signal at the amplification stage somehow turns a selection of notes from good to evil.
If it weren’t for finding bands like Norma Jean, who don’t SEEM to say anything inherently Christian at first blush on their tracks, I probably would’ve never come back to the faith.

I became a Christian September 1980, my first week at Towson State University (Baltimore). I came out of the drug culture (I bowed my heart and my knee and gave my life to Christ while coming down from huffing turpentine). I soon found Resurrection Band, Keith Green, Petra, Stryper, Phil Keaggy, and others like them. Most of it was not deep lyrically, but it replaced my Sabbath, Styx, Elton John, Pink Floyd collection. Back then we didn't have the internet to tell us that a fair number of bands/artists were not really solid in their faith or walk. Be careful who you follow/listen to. There are some bands/artists out there that have bad theology and bad doctrine, even though they sound "good".

A very fair and level headed commentary on metal music. Thank you for not flipping out in either direction, sir. God bless.

I personally love metal music, a lot of it can be filled with deep emotion, as well as me just loving the sound of distorted guitars. But I also love Christ, and I know that there is a vast majority of heavy metal music that needs to be avoided. But I think that goes for any genre of music. I mean even a lot of Christian music needs to be avoided. It just comes down to a matter of using discernment and to be careful what you listen to in general

Amazing, I think this issue is so important in our congregational music.

I used to play in a Christian metal band, my wife and I were touring a Christian school for are daughters, said school had a form that parents had to sign stating they will not have metal in there household whilst their child attends said school . I asked if we could listen to willie Nelson's ' to all the girls I love before', they said that is fine ( to my face, with a straight face )but my Band giving Christ the Glory was unacceptable . been Homeschooling

I know a great metal album that involves the theme of spiritual warfare ..."Deliverance Weapons of our Warfare"

the sound fits the mood, wanting to go out there and go to battle with the full armor of God on.

I love metal, rock, classical, and swing. It doesn't have to be Christian to be good music.

By the grace of God I'm a musician myself that writes primarily metal and rock, and some ambient lofi tracks as well. Since I've come to Christ I've had much time to think about this conversation of music and specifically metal. There is much to say, but Ill just further emphasize as others have said below... As paul wrote "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify." (1 Corinthians 10:23)
I agree some people probably shouldnt listen to metal because of conviction and or certain feelings it might evoke to them personally. As a musician I try to be mindful of not being a stumbling block. I have some heavy "sounding" songs with some screams, however I am also aware that it can pose as a hinderance to someone who might not be able to recieve the music no matter how good the message is. I think that's important to keep in mind, but I also want to serve Jesus how he is calling me to do so. Even if that means tone it down. I want to glorify God with the talents and blessings he has given me to write, produce, mix etc. They are His gifts and I want to give them back to Him. Another reason that inspires me to do what I do is creating the music that I want to hear: Biblically sound, sound doctrine, not watered down, and professes the name of Christ, within heavy music. Not to say this wasn't already around, but even before I was in Christ, I remember listening to a few Christian bands and now thinking back, I feel like i rarely heard this in their songs. Maybe I just wasn't aware, very possible. With that being said be careful of every genre of music. Yes, Christian music as well. Many pop songs on the radio, musically and sonically speaking, just sounds like pop. Acceptable to most ears and pallatable. But lyrically are horrendous and are blasphemous towards God. I'm not at all completely familiar with Bethel, Elevation, and Hillsong music but I have heard things about their music that is not okay. Not theologically sound. I dont want to speak out of ignorance, but this would be an example to me of why lyricism is important no matter what genre. In all that you do, do as unto the Lord Jesus Christ. God bless you guys.

Christian metal played a vital part of my relationship with God I dedicated my life to God at a metal concert the bands that were playing was sleeping giant, war of ages, for today and impending doom

This is immature from Todd to think that metal music is just dadadada!!! Yes there are bands that sound like that in every genre but mostly metal music is the most intellectual and hardest to write or perform. And nowadays they are much nicer than pop and rap music when it comes to lyrics and image.

"Becoming the archetype" has a wonderful song called "dichotomy". "Living sacrifice" is a pioneer band in Christian metal and I love the songs "blood work" and "truth solution". Extremely heavy music with solid Bible doctrine. Praise God for this light in the darkness. Praise Him.

Amen! Before conversion I liked and played metal and punk rock, but now I like hymns with harp, acoustic guitar, or piano the best. I can't hear or play hardly anything else without feeling off about it.

P.S. There is a 10 string acoustic guitar called 'Trinity' that I would love to get my hands on for playing hymns!
