I'm sure it was done for comedic effect, but how could they NOT know about Crosley? An American appliance manufacturer trying to break into the post-war auto market. To avoid the cost of foundry tooling, the engine was an innovative collection of machined steel cylinders surrounded by a brazed sheet metal water jacket. They entered the Le Mans 24 hour race in 1951 and not only finished, but won their class (under 750 cc).

It’s a comical little car but it had a surprisingly sophisticated little engine in it, a shaft drive overhead cam 4. I think it was also used for driving an APU in WW II American bombers. One version had a fabricated sheet metal block rather than a casting.

That one's a home-market spec but Crosleys were sold new in the UK, rebranded "Crosmobile" because of the Crossley company's trademarks.
