First, bail punishes the poor.
Over 30% of Americans can't afford an emergency of more than $1000. For many it is even worse.
Bail bondsmen are loan sharks who can break into your house.

The wait time for trial is often more than two months.
So if you are wrongfully charged, can't afford a lawyer can't afford the fees for a court appointed lawyer, can't afford the downpayment for your bond guess what happens?
You lose your job, your home, your possessions everything.
You might just feel so hopeless you plead guilty to a crime you didn't commit because you can't afford to play Russian Roulette with 5 to 10 years.

$100, 000 bail for stealing BBQ sauce is actually unconstitutional because it’s in direct violation of the 8th amendment’s protection against excessive bail.

Man, what a curious business that profits when people go to jail. I wonder if there's any kind of incentive for them to imprison more people

Unreasonable bail is a crime. That would be a slam dunk case.

Pro Tip from a former inmate: If you think/know you're going to be sentenced to some time, DON'T BOND OUT IF YOU CAN HELP IT!

Yeah you get to go home and be free for a while before you inevitably end up being sentenced but that's all dead time. If you stay in jail during your court procedure, all that time gets credited to you for your sentence. So for example: If you get sentenced to 90 days, but did 30 while doing your court case, you only have 60 days left as they credit you for time already served.

When you bond out you are basically getting temporary freedom in exchange for more time to serve later, which if you know you're gonna get time, is not only quite depressing because you have to try and savor your freedom knowing what awaits you, but also is a waste of money since you're just paying to shift around when you have to serve the time.

Unless you genuinely need to take that time to get your affairs in order, or are looking at an extremely long time, just take the time on the chin and don't bond out.

Well...In all reality you just shouldn't be doing things to get you incarcerated, but as humans we aren't perfect so if it DOES happen, keep this in mind.

In germany they look how likely you are to ditch court. If you got a job, house and family they let you go free. If you got a foreign passport and no reason to stay they keep you locked.
And of course if you are dangerous they keep you

Americans really miss the point of Jail, it should be to remove people from the street if they are a danger to themselves or others,
And not to fill the pockets of individuals running these “business “

I had a friend that sold a lot of pot in the area and was up for charges misdemeanor thing for some weed. The prosecutor asked for a million dollars bail. The defense attorney asked for him to be released on his own recognizance. The judge looked at him and said Mr Montagne we have tried everything to get you to leave our town and you just don't go. I'm releasing you on your own recognizance and if you run away and don't come back we are not going to come find you.

That's why WE need to abolish cash bail

They changed that law in Massachusetts. Your bail can no longer exceed your income. Too many people were being held because they couldn't afford bail, unnecessarily overpopulating the prisons.

Cash bond is a joke and needs to be abolished.

Bail should be dependent and proportional by the wealth of the defendant with the severity of the crime. Making bail affordable for the poor but also making sure the rich feels their financial repercussion.

Which is why bail is being phased out. 10% bail fees are ridiculous, even 1% is insane for larger values.

At the very least, bail needs to adequately match someone's income and not be something that bankrupts friends and family trying to help the accused avoid unnecessary suffering in some cases.

There's a girl in my state who ordered door dash, etc 160 times using her aunts CC to the tune of 12k. She got a 12, 000, 000 bail. I've seen drug dealers and murderers with lower bails. Shit don't make sense

Bail is unjust and should be abolished.
