History... Nobody Knows

Some things we will never know, despite all our attempts to figure them out. There are parts of history that are beyond our reach. Even the popular histories have gaps, let alone the unknown ones. And its a real shame because if we can't figure out exactly what happened in the popular histories, what are the lesser known histories going to be like...?

I really like your passion for history and the facts about the actuall fighting units and I can understand that it´s quite depressing from time to time to dig out that kind of information. Keep up the great work, you deserve a major shoutout like from Lindybeige or so.

For individual British units you really need Regimental histories. The Official Australian, New Zealand and South African histories are pretty good for their units. If you don't read German you also need a German speaker and perhaps an Italian too?

Nafziger is one of the most useful sources, at least for the Germans. Unfortunately even the most useful sources are incomplete to some extent.

Didn't Nafziger write a biography of Napoleon? He's an ex U.S Navy officer, but I've not read it. A number of people that I know have and said that it was a very good book. For the Allied units can't you approach the units for extracts from their war diaries?

You likely would have to pay out some money and get into official records at the war museum, to the details you want. Or take a trip to Germany to see their records. That is the problem with using other people's books as resource material. Your history is only as good as their histories were. If they made errors or left things out it messes your history up. Of course you may not be willing to spend the money and time for that. As that is where it goes from a youtube hobby, to being a professional historian. Maybe a patreon acct may help you in your efforts to take your research to the next level. Certainly a partner in crime may help, maybe a historical club of some sort where your videos are a collective effort by like minded people. Good luck

PS, nice black eye, talking history can be an emotional affair, more so over some pints :P

I like it when the author says openly that it is unknown what the specifics were. So, for instance, they say 'there were 2 divisions. The first was XXX, and the second one was wiped out and its records destroyed.' This is a good way to show that there is a gap, and leaves an air of mystery.

You're making lots of videos now. I'm glad your internet isn't slowing you down anymore. ^ ^

TIK (from tic - tpngue in cheek), I'm surprised you haven't realized what the solution to what units were where. all not accounted for were reassigned to KamphGroupe Halder. Leader, General Halder. Task, deceive and obfuscate. All of the battles related to this are less well documented.

Afrika Korps was made up mostly of Italian troops, armor and artillery. Everyone seems to overlook this

I think the only "game changing" perspective would be to compare Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica airlift to North Africa with Demyansk and Stalingrad. What if there were no African campaign and thus all those airplanes? What if there were no Russian campaign and all those airplanes?
North Africa was a propaganda sideshow for both Nazis and Britain. I don't think Hitler believed sufficient resources could be devoted to capturing Egypt, Suez, and Arab oil fields. So that is another question one could productively work: was German and Italian airlift sufficient for an army or army group sized operation. Clearly a corps or two were not enough and sealift was definitely unreliable.

I think you should just give you’re own retrospective version of history,
