The Tree of Hippocrates is the plane tree (or platane, in Europe) under which, according to legend, Hippocrates of Kos (considered the father of medicine) taught his pupils the art of medicine. Paul of Tarsus purportedly taught here as well.[1] The Platanus in Kos is an oriental plane (Platanus orientalis), with a crown diameter of about 12 metres, said to be the largest for a plane tree in Europe.[1]

Hippocrates' tree resides on the Platía Platanou (or "Square of the Platane"), in front of the Castle of Knights and next to the Gazi Hassan Mosque (erected in 1776) in the centre of Kos town. The current tree is only about 500 years old, [2] but may possibly be a descendant of the original tree which allegedly stood there 2400 years ago, in Hippocrates' time.[3] The tree has become hollowed out over the years, and some branches are supported by metal scaffolding. Next to the tree is a white tap with engravings in the Arabic language, also built by the Turkish Governor Gazi Hassan.

Symi is one of the most beautiful island, well the kind of neoclassical architecture, and like an amphitheatre, so so beautiful! And the monastery in the other side of the island It is amazing!

Hi Gabriel, The Greeks have had such an influence on the modern world in many aspects that include medicine, politics, warfare and philosophy. It's truly an amazing culture with many dynamics traditional and modern.

Gavdos? if you go for camping there, they will adopt you! I've heard great things about the locals, all 150 of them! It's such a small island that after a while you'll address the locals with their first name. A friend of mine visited the island in winter and he practically never payed for a drink the whole time he spent on Gavdos lol

Nice video Gabriel. I am following you for a long time now. What a pitty that you will not make it to Crete (my island) and to Gavdos. I still hope you will go to Crete and visit the mountain people in Anogia, the palm forrest of Vai and Preveli, the gorge of Samaria, the amazing towns, the fabulous beaches of Balos, Falasarna and Elafonisi!

Gavdos is special. It’s the most southern part of Europe, there are only three village on that island with a handful of people (150) with 1 teacher, 1 nurse and 1 policeman.

Furthermore, there is almost no infrastructure on that island. So it’s primarily wild and a lot of nature. I think it’s free to camp everywhere on the island and because of it’s proximity to Libia and the Sahara it is very warm there, much warmer than Kos or Simi. I would really recommend you to stay at least a week on Gavdos. Go there with Viktor

Really enjoying the Greek islands tour. Thanks for showing the less touristy side and providing honest opinions about each place.

It would be great if you could talk us through how you keep track of your visa status. Seems like that could influence your travel decisions.

A 6.6 is a pretty strong quake for Europe, luckily the one last year was not as disastrous! I wonder what earthquakes must have seemed like in the BC times...
