D-Day 80 - Capturing Holdy Battery
Показать описание
Landing in the Normandy countryside, the injured medical surgeon Captain George Lage quickly established a first aid post in a small farmhouse. The location soon became a gathering point for the lost and wounded, and despite a painful ankle, Lage set about providing help. While attending to the injured, they discovered they were near the Holdy gun battery, camouflaged in an adjacent field. This battery consisted of 60 German troops and four 105mm guns.
A group of about 70 men from the 101st Parachute Infantry Regiment, led by Captain Lloyd Patch, had also gathered there. Under cover of darkness, they managed to surprise the enemy, capturing around 30 prisoners and killing a similar number. The site was then left under the control of Knutt Raudstein while the rest of the men headed toward Sainte Marie du Mont.
Halfway there, the group came under mortar fire and immediately sent word back to Raudstein to provide covering fire with the captured guns. Although Raudstein had been in the process of destroying the guns, one remained operational. Using it, the troops fired on the nearby church steeple in the village, which they assumed was the spotter’s point directing the enemy fire. They managed to score a direct hit with one round, fortunately avoiding American Private Rogers, who was sheltering there!
