How to Paint Your Own Canvas Backdrop / DIY

In this video I show you how easy it is to paint your own canvas backdrop for photography.

Checkout links and more info below.

For the most part you will need five things:

1) A Canvas
2) Paint Tray
3) Paint (Yes, very important)
4) Water
5) Textured roller

The paint I used is Acrylic Exterior Flat Paint. Make sure the paint is flat so you don't have to worry about any glare coming up in your photos when using flash/studio light. One nice thing about Acrylic paint is that you don't have to use other chemicals or solutions to use it or to thin the paint, just combine with water and create the consistency that you want.

• PAINT
(Acrylic Exterior Flat Paint)

(NOTE: A quart was more than enough for me, but I could not find a link for that option. This is the exact same paint I used, just make sure you ask them for the size that works best for you.)

• TEXTURED ROLLER OPTIONS

• EXTENSION POLE (This helps a lot!)

Finally!!!! Someone who explains faux painting for dummies. Most people just assume that we know the difference between acrylic or other different types of paint, or the different types of brushes or of rollers, or that we know where to buy these supplies. I don't know anything about that. Lui, you are AWESOME!! You explain things so well, and you make it so easy for us, simple mortals, to understand. You the man!! Gracias!! Gracias!!

A great, clear video that tells you immediately what materials are being used, unlike most other videos on this subject. Many thanks for doing this. I look forward to making my first custom backdrop.

This is super simple. Over time this will pay for itself. It beats having to purchase seamless paper. BTW, love your IG page. Thank you.

Thanks Lui - great video and very helpful. I've been experimenting with fabric dyes on rough canvas and the results are OK, but not exactly what I'm looking for. I will give your method a try!

thank you for the tutorial, very helpful. I am also wondering how you would hang it, as it seem rather heavy.

I have never seen paint advertised as acrylic in Uk DIY stores.... We just have options of emulsion paint, in different finishes.... Good video - Thanks.

I’m thinking as an experiment of mixing a cup of marble dust into the paint to give it a little more of a matte tooth. At least I hope that will be the effect. I notice some people are using chalkboard paint for the same reason.

Why outdoor acrylic paint? I use paint for indoors. Any special reason to use paint's outdoors? Thanks, Great video.

I LOVE this! I actually painted my first backdrop on Sunday and because I saw how easy it was, I'm going to try for another one this weekend. ;-) QUESTION ... I noticed that you bought the backdrop that is already primered. The backdrop I purchased from Amazon is not primered, so in the case of not having the primered drop, what do you recommend? Put a layer of tinted primer on first? Or plain primer or ...?? I LOVE the idea of splattering using the sponge! Ingenious! Not to mention a knee-saver! ;-) I can't wait to try this!

Thanks for such a simple & straight forward explanation & demonstration of this. I will be painting my own backdrops in the near future, so this will be a great help
