How to Fix Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour Start up DirectX 8.1 Error. I have felt your pain and frustration when trying to load this classic game and you just get greeted by the DirectX error!

No Sweat! I've put together this quick and simple guide of how to fix the problem.

Quick note - I have the game on Origin, so this video shows how to fix it using this launcher.. however, I believe the same fix will work on the disc version.

This also worked for me. Screen kinda went wierd at the very start but its running! Ty so much for this, was running all over trying to download both directx8.1 and directx11, man what a nightmare resolved.

Okay i fixed the issue but when i got in the game the fonts have changed is that alright?
