Fredbear’s Family Diner – Before 1983

The story begins with William Afton and Henry Emily, two business partners who create Fredbear’s Family Diner, a small family restaurant. The diner features two animatronics: Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, both of which can also be worn as suits. William Afton, however, has darker plans. He begins using these animatronics to lure and kill children. Henry’s daughter, Charlie, is one of William’s first victims, murdered outside the diner. Her spirit goes on to possess The Puppet, which will play a key role in future events.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 (Bite of 83) – 1983

In 1983, William Afton’s own family becomes part of the tragedy. Michael Afton, William’s older son, terrorizes his younger brother by scaring him with the Fredbear animatronic. The younger brother, already terrified of the animatronics, is eventually forced too close to Fredbear during a birthday party. Fredbear's jaws close on the child's head, leading to the Bite of 83, a traumatic event that causes the younger brother's death. This event haunts Michael, setting the stage for his future role in the story.

Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Opens – Mid-1980s

Following the closure of Fredbear’s Family Diner, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza opens with new animatronics: Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Golden Freddy (the original Fredbear suit). However, William continues his killing spree, luring children into the backroom, killing them, and hiding their bodies in the animatronic suits. The murdered children’s souls possess the animatronics, leading to the haunted, aggressive behavior seen later in the series.

During this time, William Afton’s daughter Elizabeth dies as well. Against her father’s warnings, she approaches Circus Baby, one of the new animatronics that William designed for a future project. Circus Baby grabs and kills Elizabeth, trapping her spirit within the animatronic.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location – 1980s

Circus Baby’s Pizza World was set to open but closes down due to an "accident" (Elizabeth’s death). Underground, however, there is a secret facility known as Sister Location, where the Funtime animatronics (Baby, Ballora, Funtime Freddy, and Funtime Foxy) are housed. These animatronics were designed to capture and kill children, continuing William’s gruesome experiments.

In Sister Location, players follow Michael Afton, who is trying to find out what happened to his sister. During the game, Michael is captured and manipulated by Baby and the other animatronics, who use him as a vessel to escape the facility. However, Michael survives, although his body is left decaying due to the animatronic’s influence. Despite this, he continues his quest to stop his father.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (Bite of 87) – 1987

Years later, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza reopens with a new set of Toy animatronics, which are equipped with facial recognition software to keep track of criminals. However, these new animatronics are also haunted, with the Puppet (Charlie’s spirit) giving life to them as well. During this time, The Bite of 87 occurs, where one of the animatronics bites a customer, causing severe brain damage.

The restaurant is eventually shut down due to the increasing number of incidents, bad press, and the haunted animatronics.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 1 – Early 1990s

After the closure of the newer pizzerias, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza is reopened one last time with the original animatronics from the 80s: Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Golden Freddy. The souls of the murdered children continue to haunt these animatronics.

In this game, players take on the role of a night security guard. Through phone calls and environmental clues, players learn about the past murders, the haunted animatronics, and how the company tries to cover up its dark history.

William Afton’s Downfall – Mid-1990s

At some point, William Afton returns to one of the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s locations. He dismantles the haunted animatronics, but in doing so, releases the spirits of the murdered children. These spirits chase him, leading William to hide in the Spring Bonnie suit (later known as Springtrap). The suit malfunctions, crushing and trapping William inside, leaving him to suffer in agony for years.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 (Springtrap’s Return) – 2023

Many years later, a horror attraction called Fazbear’s Fright opens, based on the dark history of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The attraction finds the remains of Springtrap (William Afton) and makes him the centerpiece of the exhibit. In FNaF 3, players must survive against Springtrap and hallucinations of the original animatronics (now called Phantoms).

Through minigames, we learn that the spirits of the murdered children eventually find peace after the destruction of Springtrap, although William’s evil influence lingers.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Pizzeria Simulator (Scrap Animatronics) – Late 2020s

In FNaF 6: Pizzeria Simulator, Henry Emily returns, having created a new pizzeria to lure the remaining animatronics, including Scraptrap (William Afton), Scrap Baby (Elizabeth Afton), Molten Freddy (the remains of the Funtime animatronics), and Lefty (which contains the Puppet/Charlie’s spirit). Henry’s plan is to destroy all the animatronics once and for all.

At the end of the game, Henry sets fire to the pizzeria, trapping and burning William Afton and the rest of the animatronics. He frees the souls of the children, including Charlie, and brings an end to the nightmare. However, William’s influence persists beyond death.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted (Glitchtrap) – 2020s

After the events of FNaF 6, Fazbear Entertainment attempts to rebuild its image by creating a virtual reality game called Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted. However, hidden within the game’s code is a digital copy of William Afton, known as Glitchtrap. Glitchtrap is able to take control of the player and eventually influence them to carry out his evil plans in the real world, keeping William’s legacy of murder alive even after death.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach (Gregory and Vanny) – 2020s

In Security Breach, players take on the role of a boy named Gregory, who is trapped inside Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex after closing hours. The animatronics in this game, including Glamrock Freddy, Montgomery Gator, Roxanne Wolf, and Glamrock Chica, have been hacked and controlled by Vanny, a follower of Glitchtrap.

Vanny, who is revealed to be a person named Vanessa, has been manipulated by Glitchtrap (William Afton’s digital consciousness) to continue his legacy of murder. Throughout the game, Gregory and Glamrock Freddy must navigate the dangers of the Pizzaplex while uncovering the dark secrets behind Vanny and the Pizzaplex
