I believe the water Jesus referred to was the word of God. Faith comes by hearing and that by the Word... And at the foot washing Jesus says the word He had spoken to Peter made him completely clean he had only need wash his feet, ie, because we may step in the mire of this world, very often a predug mire.

Born Again - scriptures quoted are from the King James Version of the Bible. In the natural, in order for one to have a son or a daughter, the father places his seed in the mother. Remember that before the Cross, Biblically speaking, everything was external ie the Holy Spirit was external, Jesus in the flesh (Jesus of Nazareth) was external & God was known as God. After the Cross God now became our Heavenly Father & we became His sons & daughters by the Father placing His seed Jesus, Spiritually speaking, in the believer (see Colossians 1:26-27 & Galatians 2:20). We were Born Again! Very few understand this as it is hardly ever preached as 90%+ of manmade Christian denominations refuse to preach the only Gospel of Grace of given by the Crucified Jesus Christ Himself to Paul to take to the uncircumcised gentiles as Jesus of Nazareth (Jesus in the flesh) in the main was rejected by the Jews ! See Acts 28:25-28
