Helen Shapiro first achieved prominence in 1961 when her debut single, "Don't Treat Me Like a Child", reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart. After the two million-sellers, her success continued in 1962 with further hits including "Tell Me What He Said" and film appearances in Play It Cool and It's Trad, Dad!.[3] In 1963, Shapiro toured with the Beatles. Since the 1970s, she has branched out as a performer in musical theatre and jazz; she appeared in the West End and toured extensively with the British jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton and his band.

Helen was an English schoolgirl who had hit records at an early age something like The English Brenda Lee. She recorded this song when she was 14. In about 1963 when she was about 17 she toured with the Beatles and was top of the bill. There is a video of the Beatles appearing as guests on her TV show. The hits dried up before she was 20 and she matured into a jazz singer who had a long career outside of the pop arena.

I just recently discovered Helen Shapiro as she was not properly promoted in America. She was known as England's answer to to Brenda Lee(another very popular singer from the U.S.A. at the time). What is mind boggling about her is that she was only 14 at the time she recorded this. Beauty. personality, and talent of this singer means America missed out!. The good Lord surely gifted her. Search "I'm Not Responsible" for a more fast paced song of hers.

The Beatles were actually a supporting act for the teenage Helen Shapiro on one of her UK tours.

Hey,

You could check her other song *Look who it is*; it featured the Beatles (Except Paul which is outside the vicinity of the other 3 Beatles).

In that song, Helen is only 17 but she is acting like an older person with these Guys by her side which act with her, in comedy.

The 60's ... When girls REALLY could sing. They didn't need gimmicks or scanty costumes either.

watch 'will you love me tomorrow' and see if you can spot the modern singer influenced by helen's 60s look.

I'm quite sure Marc Bolan said he went to school with Helen Shapiro - Such innocent times - on the surface, at least. This style of naive, innocent, 60's pop was a speciality of one of the first INDEPENDENT pop record producers, JOE MEEK ... Now I've got to be honest, i don't really like his songwriting style - his songs lyrics were pretty bland - BUT ... HE HAS ONE OF THE most interesting stories in pop music ever ... THERE'S EVEN A FILM DOCUMENTING HIS LIFE, FEATURING JAMES CORDEN as the drummer - JOE MEEK SHOT HIMSELF AND HIS LANDLADY - he was kinda having a mental breakdown because he hadn;t been paid for one of the BIGGEST HITS EVER ... the FIRST TRANSATLANTIC HIT ... "TELSTAR" ... You should react to that and put JOE MEEK in the title and you will win the respect of the people who KNOW how important he was. It's a very sad film, because it;s a very true story ... he waqsn't paid for his massive hit, TELSTAR, because some French person claimed it was his tune ... just AFTER Joe's tragic death, THEN the courts ruled in Joe's favour ... the tune WAS his all along ... too late ... I don't think Joe's money EVER got paid to his family either. I'm not sure but I THINK it was pilfered by the Government ... I just vaguely recall the end credits explaining all that. Desperately said ... SO MANY SONGWRITERS HAVE DIED BY SUICIDE because they weren't paid. The writers of CAN;T LIVE (IF LIVING IS WITHOUT YOU) - pete ham AND tom ... (NAME ESCAPES ME)

Sorry for the long comment but it brings memories flooding back.

I love Helen Shapiro. She’s British Jewish and reminds me in ways of an earlier Amy Winehouse in ways.
