Parliament debates relationship between Government and trade unions

The relationship between the Government and trade unions came into focus and was the subject of debate during the second reading of a Bill for platform workers.

Holland-Bukit Timah GRC MP Christopher de Souza interrupted Aljunied MP Gerald Giam’s speech, raising a point of contention that the Workers Party MP appeared to be making a political speech attacking the National Trades Union Congress instead of speaking about the Bill.

One of my course on Industrial relationships 1992, the notes stated Union leaders cannot be from management position, meaning the person should be a rank and file worker . NUTC and PA are an apparatus of the PAP. The current system is clearly the unions are headed by potential politicians.

So, all delivery riders and the rest of Gig workers remember Gerald Giam from the WP in Aljunied GRC, He was trying to stand up and speak out for all of you but was interrupted and attacked by PAP MP Chris De Souza from the onset. Following this Gerald was also attacked by PAP, Heng Chee How, Koh Poh Koon and Indranee Rajah for suggesting NTUC is not independent of the PAP. Gerald did not get to say what he wanted to say in Parliament. What is the PAP afraid of? Why did they ganged up to disrupt WP Gerald Giam in Parliament. Vote the WP. The lesser the PAP in Parliament the better, including the Speaker of the House. The 'bigballsman' is sick and tired of the bullying antics of the PAP in Parliament.

The quote from National library of Barisan Socialist is when PAP was a minority. And they broke up into 2 and one folded into Workers Party because they lost trust with the union then. So the circumstances were different. How many of us since working in the 90s, know about NTUC intervening into employees rights? None….

It appears to be less about the influence of NTUC and more about the PAP’s recognition of the growing threat of losing votes to the opposition, particularly in light of the upcoming General Election that has to be called before November 2025.

Has the PAP debunked Gerald's call for Independent Union? Imho, they only provided their like-minded opinion. The 40% can have our own opinions. And by Jealously Defending the status quo, and against WP's call for an independent union, is the PAP Against an Independent Union and does the PAP support Non-Independence? If so, we need to be very concerned !
Capitalism is profit at all cost and the vulnerable workers need fair representation. 40% vote Opposition and are they proportionately represented in NTUC union? We trust our people only

The PAP must surely realise that Singaporeans do not see the PA and NTUC as independent, apolitical organisations. Neither can the Elections Department, under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Office, maintain its independence.
