How Dangerous Was It To Be A Worker On The Golden Gate Bridge?

During the construction of many other iconic buildings in this period, workers were subjected to perilous conditions, with one wrong foot or unfortunately timed gust of wind often leading to workers falling to their death. In fact, engineers at the time often expected their to be one death for every million dollars spent on a bridge project, with around 35 expected to perish during the Golden Gate Bridges construction. However, the Chief Engineer Joseph Strauss provided the workers with an 120,000 dollar safety net and mandated safety equipment. Although 11 men would die building the bridge, 19 were saved by the net, who later became known as the halfway to hell club.

It's weird hearing his voice when not talking about star wars

You had to have balls of steel to work on structures like that, hats off to those men.

The “halfway to hell club” is one of the most badass names I’ve ever heard

They also didn't want to spend the money on the nets because they were too expensive.
Only when a worker said they were dropping company owned tools and materials, did they care about "safety". 😓

I just expect him to any second to start talking about white Kyber crystals, type 7 force users, and how often force users need to charge their lightsabers.

That one photo of the group of engineers building the Rockefeller Center eating their lunch without a care in the world balancing on nothing but a girder is so iconic. It’s fascinating to look at…

I always thought that he sounded like he belonged as a history documentary narrator.

There should be a day in memory of appreciation for men who created so many iconic buildings and so much hard labor that went into constructing so many buildings in America..when I see those guys constructing all those buildings in New York and every where else . It's sad to think of the labor that was set before them and how they really weren't paid all that well when faced with death . We should always be reminded if need be to stay and keep appreciation for those hard working men who at times gave it their all and didn't make it home . God bless all the incredibly hard working men who put in all their effort .

I love how half of this short was pictures of workers on skyscrapers in New York and not the bridge.

People need to understand that the chief engineer, at that time, could have got away without safety nets but he cared about them at least getting home to their family
