Imagine being Boromir and having this be one of the last things you see, can’t complain

It constantly blows my mind that this fight lasts less than a minute; it always feels much longer. One of those moments that really show you the power of visual storytelling.

Gotta love the realism of the fight in terms of how Aragorn's skill is portrayed vs. Lurtz's raw strength. When the fight starts out it's an off-kilter brawl, with Aragorn struggling to gain his footing and he takes several blows in the process BUT once Aragorn does manage to steer the fight into a straight 1 v 1 duel with swords he literally cleans Lurtz the fuck out like a chump within 3 seconds. Beautiful.

As brilliantly cast as this trilogy was, Viggo was just on another level. The man brought an astounding degree of legitimacy to the role.

The sound of the dagger flying and the deflection is so satisfying.

Fun fact, when the actor for Lurtz was swordfighting with Viggo at the end, they couldn't get it to look right, so Viggo decided to actually decapitate Lurtz' actor for a more realistic scene. Peter Jackson liked it so much he kept it in the final cut of the movie.

Who remembers the joy of battling this guy in the two towers game?

Apparently the knife Lurtz throws at Aragorn was supposed to hit the tree behind him but the actor playing Lurtz couldn't see very well through the mask he was wearing so he threw it at Aragorn but Viggo actualy managed to deflect the knife with his sword just in time and the director decided to keep that scene in instead of redoing it.

Weird to think Lurtz was on screen for a much shorter time than Azog, and yet Lurtz made much more of an impact in my opinion.
Azog can't hold a candle to Lurtz.

This fight alone is better than EVERY fight in the Hobbit Trilogy. No fancy bullshit, just brutal, savage close range combat between two highly skilled, slightly superhuman warriors.

One of my favorite parts is how realistic the facial expressions are. Boromir doesn't accept his fate in a clearly BA way for the cameras, his facial expressions just scream "I'm so broken and battered right now... did I really fail? Is this my end?"

Aragorn isn't looking like an action hero, but a well trained warrior holding back fear with his discipline who at one point needs to stop just to rally the wind back into his lungs so he can stand. They even resist the urge for him to sneer back like a cool guy at Lurtz as he makes his final 'pointed' gesture, showing him briefly unnerved, then more annoyed and defiant before just finishing him off. SO great.

You could tell lurtz had a lot of raw strength and talent but he was so young and Aragorn is so experienced being that he is over 80 that he beat him with pure skill.

I love how the last blow is choreographed/acted out by Viggo.

It looked like the final blow really had the appropiate force required for decapition. The tension in the blade and the trueness of his strike really show a skill in swordsmanship.

This whole fight is savage.

I like how Aragorn cuts off Lurtz's arm before stabbing him. Very often in movies and tv you have sword fights where two guys clash aimlessly until one gets bored and stabs the other. It's nice to see Aragorn create the opening to stab Lurtz by literally disarming him.

I like how Lurtz is clearly the stronger fighter of the two but it's Aragorn's sword skills that just overwhelm him in the end

The complete primal savagery of Lurtz grabbing the blade of that sword and mockingly pulling it deeper into himself after Aragorn impaled him is one of the most badass moments in any movie ever.

There is so much archetypal information that is communicated in the few seconds of that exchange that it's hard to articulate. Even though he was bested, he's basically saying that no matter what happens, he will not stop coming. He's saying that "you can slay my flesh, but my commitment to the spirit of evil and domination that exists within me can not be destroyed." He's completely possessed by evil and literally MUST be destroyed.

It's a perfect metaphor for the war of attrition that exists between good and evil.

The part where Lurtz licks the blood off of the knife genuinely struck fear into me.

Aragorn's entire character is conveyed in this scene and the following one when he tends to Boromir.

He goes after Lurtz fearlessly and mercilessly, the ending sparring perfectly demonstrating his superior skills, Lurtz trying to intimidate him in his last breaths but Aragorn just being "WTH is wrong with you? I'll put you out of your miserable existence!". Contrast that with how he after the battle tends to his brother-in-arms. Perfect character. We need more Aragorns.

The most reslistic and brutal fighting scene I’ve ever seen in fantasy to this day. Every blow is aimed to kill. It has everything - physical brawling, shield throwing, dagger throwing and finally a very short and realistic duel with the swords. Tension all the way. And everything in less than a minute. Absolute perfection.

I absolutely love the cinematography in how Aragorn's sword is nearly fully pointing at the camera after he decapitates Lurtz. It looks so badass.
