Let the high E ring *open* for the entire verse, (so, drop the
middle finger from your D chord. The bass player covers that note anyway, and that open E note sounds phat!)
Or play a D minor chord, then just move your index over to the A string (with your ring finger, so they are *both* pressing the A string: first fret with index, 3rd with ring) and then you can just press and release your ring finger. Easy peasy! (play this with my trio and i fatten up the bridge with some awkward made up chords and note pickin' as well.)
