What’s something rich kids do that really surprised you?

Back when I was in college, I had a friend whose dad was a multi-millionaire. Whenever we went out to eat, he had this routine he followed. If the server was kind and put in a solid effort to make our experience pleasant, he’d leave a huge tip. The amount could be anywhere between 100 dollars to 500 dollars, and he wouldn’t hesitate to do this several times in a single day. What shocked me the most was what happened when the server wasn’t polite or seemed unnecessarily irritated. In those cases, my friend would refuse to leave even a dollar as a tip, and he wouldn't allow any of us to leave a tip either.

There was one incident where we had a classic “Karen” as our server, and things got pretty crazy. My rich friend asked her if they had any specials, and she snapped back with, “Just read the menu and order.” Obviously, he wasn’t going to let that slide. He ended up ordering a ton of food for all of us and told her to hurry up if she wanted a tip. He even flashed a 100 dollars bill at her as motivation. She thought she’d hit the jackpot and grinned the entire time she brought out our meals. But in the end, my friend gave that 100 dollars bill to a different waiter and walked out, leaving her empty-handed.

What surprises me is that someone is surprised that someone won't tip if the service is bad. I assume it's an american, because tipping culture there has gotten out of hand.

I wouldn’t be surprised if after they leave the Karen demanded the $100 from the other waiter

plot twist: that place pooled their tips at the end of the night.

It frustrates me so much that people just EXPECT tips nowadays. Tips are supposed to be for good service. If I'm ignored, spoken to rudely, or whatever by my server, that server shouldn't get a tip! That's just my opinion. I know lots of people that think tips are required every time regardless of the situation

I typically only tip if I'm:
-eating inside
-was given really good service or go there often
-it is very busy that day
I'm broke so I can't leave a tip every time, and while employers should be paying their employees more I also shouldn't be expected to tip everywhere I go

Convince kids that aren't rich that their parents don't love them as much.
When I was in elementary school, my family was comfortable but didn't have much extra. I always wondered why I couldn't have what the other kids did, and they always told me it was because my parents must not love me as much as theirs. I didn't really believe it, but part of me always wondered.

This is how tips SHOULD work. Not with 100+$ but only for good service

I am not rich and I will do that to service. I overpay for decent or great service not because I have to but because it feels right.

That's fair enough, tip should be earned not demanded

I've heard that something worse than leaving no tip is leaving 2 pennies. It shows that you aren't just being cheep and giving no tip or that you forgot, but that you thought their service was bad enough you needed to put your 2 cents in.

Sadly it’s usually the mean servers who need the tip. They may not be the nicest but that probably means they have terrible mental health, work a lot, or had something bad happen. I’m sure some of them are rude, but giving them nothing wouldn’t change that, but showing them kindness would

the thing is there are people who think everyone is out to get them and get so offended by the slightest things so the customer is not always right
