Hey Brian, I'm actually not a guitar player (more keyboard) but I find your lessons really helpful and the approach is really good. One thing I wanted to ask you, as a fellow musician, I've been into composing a lot lately. Writing my own songs, but I always get a bit stumped on the process so to speak. If I start with a melody it doesn't seem to have much direction to go later in the song, if I start with a set in stone chord progression it sounds quite rigid. When I listen to instrumental songs or compositions the harmonies and melodies seem to be one entity if you know what I mean. I don't hear chord and melody, I hear one entity where the melody and accompaniment are as one. This seems very hard to achieve to me unless you are at the stage where you can literally hear the melody and harmonic accompaniment before playing it, so you know exactly the sound you want.
Long story short, my two questions are 1) how do you usually approach writing your instrumental songs? 2) Do you feel your at the point where you can play what you hear straight away or is it more of a trial and error process? Mine seems to be the latter, especially when it comes to harmonising melody.
