In 3 steps: 4^1/4 x 2^1/3 = (2^1/2)^1/4 x 2^1/3 = 2^1/2 x 2^1/3 = 2^5/6 which equals the 12th root of 1024 in simplest terms. No need for the fancy footwork in this case.
