Viewer Question: James - Well a double whamy.Just hours after your Friday show,No Time To Die was delayed to next April. Then this weekend,as a result, according to Variety,Cineworld has decided to close all their Regal Cinemas in the U.S.,U.K and Ireland this week. This is a bad sign IMO.Do you think AMC will follow suit and what are the odds WB just moves Wonder Woman 84 and Dune into next year in response?

I feel bad for everyone involved but especially for their staff, who they will.most likely have to lay off in droves. Being unemployed sucks, but being unemployed during a pandemic can be very damaging for one's mental health.

Dune just got delayed to 2021. I don’t see how Wonder Woman keeps its release date at this point.

I work for cineworld in the UK and the company has handled this situation rather poorly, just a lack of communication and transparency. I feel really bad for our main manager who found this news out the same way we all did (through an internal leaked email, he was mortified), every step of the way we have found things out through a third party and not the company.

I don’t want to complain since there are people in worse situations due to covid, but I feel bad for the staff with family to support (I’d happily leave my job temporarily if cineworld would keep those who desperately need the job on).

Really going to miss working there and watching all the new films, I hope the industry can recover.

Hope you are all safe and well, stay positive =)

As long as they can survive this mess, the theatrical experience will survive. Asian theaters are proof of that

I went to see Akira last week. When I came out of my theater I walked around the foyer thinking "I may not get to see this place again"

What's the point of endless postponements if there are no cinemas left to show the films? If AMC etal go bust, what's the plan for the studios?

It's so sad that theaters have no choice but to close down again, after fighting so hard to reopen in the first place. Hopefully it doesn't last very long and things get under control soon.

Well, Dune is delayed by a year, another nail in the coffin.

I actually read somewhere that Hollywood personalities/directors have all signed a letter to US Congress to bail out the movie theaters. I know Hollywood is normally known for being a pretty Leftist business, but both Republicans and Democrats in Hollywood have signed this letter.

The letter was signed by a multitude of different directors, including big name blockbuster filmmakers (e.g. Michael Bay, James Cameron, and Christopher Nolan), industry legends (e.g. Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg), and even indie darlings (e.g. Greta Gerwig, David O. Russell, Taika Waititi).

Question is, what's the chances that Congress will vote to approve the bailout? That's the elephant in the room in this context.

Movie theatres are not the same as restaurants or bowling alleys (outdoor eating, open windows/doors, etc). A theatre is an enclosed space with all doors/windows sealed- sitting for 2 + hrs in this enclosed space with strangers (absolutely 0 ventilation) - if anyone in the theatre has the virus a theatre is a much larger risk and that's why people won't go. If NY and LA opened, the #'s of patrons would be low. A theatre is pretty much the last place I'd want to be during a pandemic- and clearly many others agree. I get that this is John's passion- but it feels naive and unrealistic. Even doctors have come out saying movie theatres are not a smart idea right now. Maybe in John's rich/fancy area the theatres are all spaced and sanitized every 10 minutes... where I live it's more like: rip: hope you enjoyed the movie at the crusty theatre with the sticky seats.

Also VERY important to remember- people (many many people) have lost jobs/income. Movies are way too $$ and this will be an issue for a long while as the pandemic has caused a lot of people to have to reexamine where they spend their $$.

If anyone thinks these movies in 2021 Are going to make the kind of money that they would’ve made in 2019 you are just delusional so no matter how many films are coming out if anything that’s just gonna divide the pot of money even more

I blame Governor Cuomo for not allowing movie theaters to reopen September 30th. Indoor dining at 25% has been allowed since September 30th. How is indoor dining essential? It isn't. I want to add that 25% capacity doesn't make ends meet for the restaurant or movie theater. There's no correlation between opening sooner to increase capacity, so I don't know why businesses are calling for it. All I have to say is that, in the end, taxpayers will have to pay for everything the people in charge have destroyed whether it be a tax write-off, a loan, a subsidy, etc.

John is pro movie theater and you can see his bias shining big time. The movie theaters will be closed until probably the summer and most of them probably won’t open back up during that time. They are in big trouble until we get a 100% cure for this virus!

the unfortunate reality is that covid isnt going to go away for a while. This pandemic could last years. Until we have an effective vaccine we arent going to see the box office numbers of yesterday. Its really sad

I genuinely believe that studios should have kept some of their tentpole movies like WW84, bond, black widow, etc. Tenet is a high-profile movie but it isn't the kind of movie that will bring people back to the movies.. we have seen chinese studios releasing high-profile movies, which have brought back to the theatres. rob, I respectfully disagree with you. Releasing James Bond would have made sense for 2 reasons. Bond has always relied more on the overseas box office than domestic and considering this Craig's final outing as 007 anyways, why not help out the theatres by releasing a movie that will bring people back!!

My local Cinemark is opening and only doing personal screenings for between 100 to 150 dollars for up to 20 people.

I wonder if AMC will do that

I feel like what's happened with the restarting of movies is almost perfectly reflective of what's happened with the pandemic as a whole. If everyone had sucked it up and properly wore masks and socially distanced, it would've helped reduce the damage done by the coronavirus and allow us to return to "normal" sooner. In the same way, if film studios had "sucked it up" and just released their movies even with this middling demand, it would keep movie theaters alive long enough to be ready to show their movies when the pandemic is over. But now, because everyone is looking after their self-interest only, the entire movie industry is in the process of collapsing.

This has a lot to do with major cities like New York, Florida, and Los Angeles who have been doing particularly rough during this pandemic, with many of their theaters yet to reopen. Couple that with the fact that many of the open theaters are operating within a limited seating capacity and you have a reason for studios to fear a lack of momentum.
