This problem is far away from Olympiad, this is a problem for 6th grade student. And explanation is not quite correct.
You need to define available values for 'x' first, at the very beginning, not after the solution, because during the solution you can bring invalid (not in this particular problem) values.
The available value are -∞ < x < ∞ except x = 0 & x=-1
