FBI offers $3m reward for GameOver Zeus creator Russian hacker Evgeniy Bogachev

The FBI is offering a $3 million reward for info leading to the arrest of its most wanted cyber criminal, the russian Hacker Evgeniy Bogachev. This is the highest price ever put on the head of a hacker, as this particular guy allegedly made off with $100 million from American bank accounts.

The 31-year-old fugitive, is accused of designing an attack known as GameOver Zeus which sent phishing emails containing malicious links or files enabling Bogachev and his ring to siphon bank account numbers and passwords.

After the infected computers became part of a global network of compromised machines, or botnet’, the hackers were able to access victims bank account to steal money.

Bogachev also reportedly used another piece of malware, Cryptorlocker, to encrypt users’ computer files. His ring would then force victims to pay ransoms of up to $700 to unlock their files.

About 25% of affected users are located in the United states. More than one million computers are believed to be infected by the “GameOver Zeus” botnet.

Bogachev was charged by federal authorities last year in Pittsburgh with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, bank fraud and money laundering.
