V.90 Dial-up Modem Handshake - Transactional Analysis

This basically just places the signal identification at the right time.

The blue and red tags are for V.34... but it should do justice since it uses the same signal.

My jaw dropped to the floor when I learned just how much wizardry went into squeezing a usable data rate through telephone lines.

I have always found old dial up modems very fascinating and I love how in detail this video discusses how you modem and your ISP communicate! I actually have a bunch of old dial up modem cards for vintage PC’s and I hope at some point in the future to find a way to experiment with connecting them together.

This is gold. 0:07 So this is why it sounded sightly different here in Italy!

It's like they're both trying to decide between a handshake, fist bump, hug... Finally just a handshake and start the conversation right away

Fascinating. Last time i used dial up was when i was a little kid, mid 2000s. This really explained how the dial up works and with my knowledge in networking as an IT student i understood most of it.

I wish computers would still vocalize their data speeds. computers used to scream out loud at operators "IM TRANSMITTING AT 56K DOWNLOAD AND UPLOADING AT 36K DO YOU HEAR ME" you have to ask a webpage to do a speed handshake nowadays

This is very interesting! Thanks for clarifying in the comments that it's a V.34 handshake - you might consider editing the title of the video.

I'd be interested to see V.92 and V.32 versions if you were ever so inclined.

I always get excited when I hear those sounds when connecting to internet. Those crybabies who complained of modem noise could have disabled monitoring to silence it. I never disabled mine.

Watch in .25 speed it's much easier to understand

Fun fact: it would be possible to decode the data being sent from 0:24 onwards before the speaker is muted

this is how my brain sounds when I try to think about literally anything

It'd be awesome to get an experimental license from the FCC and get a 56K QAM signal on the air

Computers back then were designed to have emotions
if it failed they’d be sad
if they couldnt find anyone to give a handshake they’d keep looking
if they handshake they would celebrate by teaching eachother about their own data
now everything is instant and so quiet
computers are emotionless and are like slaves to humans

The captions make this really funny for some reason

so basically 2 computers talk to each other then cream at eachother to figure how to connect

edit: i meant to say scream but i'm keeping it there cause its funny af

Fun fact: Data transmissions are analogous to crowds shouting words and sentences
