In the first episode of DW Berlin Briefing, we dive deep into the shifting landscape of transatlantic relations, exploring how Germany and Europe must adapt to the evolving political realities in the US. Join host Nina Haase as she sits down with experts Ines Pohl (DW's Washington Bureau Chief) and James D. Bindenagel (Visiting Distinguished Fellow, German Marshall Fund of the US and Former US Ambassador to Germany) for an insightful conversation on the implications of Donald Trump's leadership, European security, support for Ukraine and the changing dynamics of US-European relations, and how Germany's government crisis is impacting all of this.

Key discussions include:
• The shift from shared values to transactional politics between the U.S. and Europe.
• How Germany, under Merkel’s legacy, navigated a values-driven relationship with the US, and why that might no longer be sustainable with leaders like Trump.
• Ines' firsthand insights from traveling across the US and speaking to voters on whether Trump’s promises of uniting the country are feasible.
• The challenges of European unity in responding to the unpredictable nature of Trump’s foreign policy.
• The stark reality of Europe having to take responsibility for its own security in a post-Cold War world, especially after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
• the implications of the collapse of Germany's governing coalition for support for Ukraine

I understand countries like Poland and Finland supporting Ukraine but Germany?
Why on earth would Germany take the fight against Russia so personally at the cost of their own economy?

You work for 40yrs to have $1M in your
retirement, meanwhile some people are putting just $10K in a meme coin from just a few months ago and now they are multimillionaires.

Germany should seriously consider leaving the EU and abandoning NATO. Their involvement in the EU and NATO has financially crippled the country.

really, you should prioritize Germany before Ukraine. What is wrong with you? A strong Germany will not care whether Ukraine falls or not

15:50 “We would expect the Europeans to provide for its own security”, but ignore the fact that NATO expanded after the Cold War continuously…hmm.

Let's face it. We would not even be having this conversation had NATO respected Russia's geopolitical concerns by not expanding to its borders and forcing Russia to invade Ukraine in self defense to avoid being encircled by a hostile military alliance, just as it did in Georgia. The arrogance and wanton disregard for Russia's legitimate interests on NATO's part caused the current mess. And while villainizing Putin makes us feel good, I seriously doubt that any other Russian leader would not have done the exact same thing. Even Gorbachev harshly criticized NATO's unwarranted eastern expansion in the post-Cold War era and considered it a betrayal of the promises made to him in the 1990s. The collective west only has itself to blame for its own problems.

Lots of German companies have relocated to the U.S. to escape tariffs, they know what’s coming. Sadly without cheap energy Europe will no longer be a major manufacturing hub. Less taxes collected means less money for expenses. The poor man of Europe will get poorer. We are spending 1 trillion USD every 3 months in servicing our debt. Time for Germany to get into debt as well if they want this relationship to remain.

8:40 is that why you invited so many islamists, who now demand sharia law in Germany and elsewhere? Not to mention the taxpayers you burdened to provide for immigrants. The damage you've done is gigantic.
