Sometimes it's not a good idea to let someone out if it's going to interrupt traffic flow.

I’m always baffled when someone stops to let me out and there’s no one behind them. I appreciate the gesture but it just wasn’t necessary.

I agree, if there’s no one behind you don’t stop. It then gives the car coming out a clear view down the road.

Situational awareness is key and no two incidents are the same.
Your closing statement is 💯.
Stay safe everyone 👍

Also, if you stop, are you letting the car turning into the junction go ahead or are you letting the car coming out of the junction go? Confusion!

If the traffic is heavy and I can do so without coming to a halt, I'm happy to let people turn right across me to get out of the middle of the road, or to let drivers turning left pull in front of me, but letting someone turn right _out of_ a side road across two lanes puts them under too much pressure for it to be safe. We have junctions here where it's far quicker (and safer) to turn left, drive half a mile to the next roundabout and come back the other way than it is to try to turn right onto the main road.

"Each situation should be judged on it's own merits"
I'm glad to hear this clarification because previous videos there have been comments saying don't interrupt the flow of traffic as a blanket statement. It should be treated as a judgement call based on the situation, hazards, speed, flow of traffic and traffic behind, at least a fifth of those judgement calls can help other road users emerge if safe to do so... rather than having them feel pressured, anxious or having cars behind them becoming impatient.

The best one is when you are driving down a road with cars parked on each side and there is a train of several cars coming down the road so you wait for them to pass as there is nowhere to pull in ahead or it would cause a gridlock so then the guy at the front of the oncoming train of cars pulls in a tight space to let you through but you can't go down because there is still several cars all blocking the road still with nowhere to go so you sit there waiting signeling them to go but they just stay there for a while and eventually come down raging and swearing at you because you didn't go.

The occasions when I ALWAYS, unless there is an overriding safety consideration, slow or stop to allow someone to right turn across me, is if it’s either a cycle or motorbike. It’s simply too dangerous for these road users to be sat in the middle of he road waiting to turn. Other than this I fully agree with Ashley that each case needs to be fully assessed bespoke. On the whole the slower I’m already moving the more likely I am to let someone across. And the golden rule of never pulling up in stop start traffic across a side road access is something too few drivers seem to observe, and really is one of my pet peeves, it’s so thoughtless and can really clog up the traffic flow.

Clip one was about letting someone turn into the junction, cammer probably thought that as they were now stationary they may as well let someone out of the junction as well.

Have been waiting for a video on this subject! I drive a lot and see the first scenario also a lot and i have seen it confuse and annoy almost everyone behind the car that’s letting someone out. For people who like to keep edging the nose of their car out too so someone’s stops for them, that causes other road users to stop and let you out when in a panic or out of worry that you’ll pull out on them. Please remember driving is so so dangerous and at any second something terrible can happen. Look out for each other. Even the idiot drivers you have to bite your tongue sometimes because it can just make things worse for other people around.

This scenrario is where my ‘wave off’ comes into affect. If I’m that right turner waiting and I’m not happy, I just ‘wave off’ and cancel the waiting car. Wait for the verbal abuse or ‘finger’ and then go about my day, cus clearly me waving them on upsets a few folk. 😂

Also - and a general point here from a pedestrian - Dear drivers, I AM A PEDESTRIAN - I will find a gap between you lot to cross the road. That's how it works - I'm encroaching onto your territory, so don't slow down, stop, flash or wave, just get on with it. Do not mistake me doing my kerb drill for pleading for one of yous to stop. I'm not in a rush, if I was I wouldn't be walking.

I leave a big gap in slow moving traffic to allow people to come out but never flash, it has to be their decision to decide if its clear. It never change my speed in normal flowing traffic as the people behind dont understand. You can get a situation where one decides to overtake you at the same time as the one decides to pull out. They can't see each other because of you. There are some junctions around here where so many people stop to give way that people actually expect it and get aggressive if you don't stop for them even though your on a 60mph road. Someone has gone to the effort of painting lines on the floor so each other knows what they are doing.

I see this so often drivers letting other cars out when there is no need, I know they're trying to be nice but if someone behind ain't paying attention they have smashed into the back of them. But stuck in traffic then help out if you can.

I agree that letting people out makes sense only if it aids flow. An example, the other day I was emerging from a side road and the main lot were having to queue because of a breakdown further up. The lorry left enough space and waved me out so that when traffic along the main thoroughfare moved along, I could just slot in front of the lorry and he then slotted in behind me.

Nice and smooth for both parties and the people behind the lorry likely didn't even notice a difference. IMO good "letting out" is all about creating space and opportunities in situations where it doesn't impede those behind you, rather than coming to an abrupt halt trying to be "nice".

The lines at a junction means you give way to traffic on main road, if you stop and let people out you are causing others to make a decision that may cause an accident. There are of cause times when it is ok but not if you inconvenience others.

A regular frustration of mine is waiting to turn right out of a T junction, the only other car to be seen is coming from the left, wanting to turn right, they stop and wave me out...just so they can cut across the junction instead of making the turn properly!

for the first one i've always found the phrase "a predictable driver is a safe driver" even if that means appearing a little rude or inconsiderate, the cars turning and emerging KNOW you have priority which reduces confusion and dangers/risks. if theres an opportunity to let people out, such as in slower moving traffic then leaving some space to let people out is still the move i would make

Quite a few dangers with letting cars out in situations like the first clip, I’d only do that if I could see the oncoming traffic was clear and that the car wanting to emerge likely wouldn’t be able to just fit through a gap in the traffic.
Stopping to let people out can make them rush or even completely neglect to do observations and check if it’a clear in the oncoming lane. Also I’d be worried about cars behind being impatient or confused and attempting an over take.
I do like to let cars out but personally I’d be careful when and where you do it

It does require a lot of thought. However, we should all be aware that right turning on some roads is an utter nightmare and at certain times of day almost impossible (Hamstead Road in Birmingham is an example). So, while there are a number of considerations when letting people go, the alternative is often people forcing their way out in an unsafe manner.

Note - Hamstead Road is a long, thin and busy road where there isn’t any real opportunity to left turn and then come back round (no roundabouts for miles).
