Edit: Guys, the title was originally "This Was a Huge Waste of Money for Sony" and the thumbnail originally didn't have the "🚫" symbol over "Welcome to the Family". It really made it seem like Sony just bought Square Enix.

If Sony acquires Square Enix, it is NOT because they "need" Square Enix, it is because they want to PROTECT Square Enix from being bought by Microsoft after Activision Blizzard.

Nobody brings up that square is also a manufacturing company, not just games. You have music, anime, manga, figure, etc production that is apart of the company also. Full Metal Alchemist is square enix published, produced, and distributed for instance.

Buying them could cost less. The premium to have their games exclusive could be massive. The projected accumulation could amount to buying the company.

I think you're forgetting how large Sony's film and music operations are. If Sony were to acquire Square, I believe the interest wouldn't lie so much in their games, rather than having the ability to leverage Square's i.p.'s to produce ancillary media, like film, tv, and music, and increase brand recognition through media expansion. Up to this point, Square's ancillary media have varied wildly in quality and direction, and coming into Sony's production house could set qualitative standards and bring consistency of direction and output for these different mediums.

Square has so many other games than just final fantasy that I think it would hurt some of those other titles if it went exclusive.

I'm not a fan of these 1st party companies coming in and buying other big studios. That being said, with year over year inflation, it might be cheaper for Sony in the long run to buy square instead of having to pay for timed exclusives.
