This came standard on my new Canyon Grail:ON CF 7 AXS. The bike is super light, and I live at the top of a hill so I only use the assist at the end of my ride for climbing the last, long steep section. However, if I don't turn on the Bosch system, I cannot shift gears. Nothing like getting to the bottom of the hill and being stuck in the lowest gear! It seems that the derailleur relies solely on the Bosch Battery for power. It would be better to use the Bosch battery to charge the smaller battery. That way, if I run out of juice in the big battery, I can still ride the bike with no assist. The way I ride the Bosch battery lasts a month or more unless I ride with friends so I need it to keep up. I might forget to charge it some day. It isn't really a problem finishing the ride without the assist, but finishing a ride without shifting is just not possible.
Do the Trek or Scott SRAM derailleurs rely solely on their main battery too??

I'd still want a battery in it for backup shifting in case main battery dies. It's possible that I know of someone who recently meant to lock the battery with their key at store and shoved key into the charge port (having left rubber cap lose) causing battery to pop it's breaker and stop working. (me) So nice to be able to still shift in that situation.

I have a Fuel EXE and I actually uninstalled my smart box so I could go back to using a separate battery. I take my bike to bike parks just as much as I ride trails and being able to drop some weight on the bike by removing the battery is sweep

the Charge on the RD easily lasts for a thousand kilometres with high usage on a bike without Motor assistance where you shift alot more to find the best gear. In that time you need to Charge your 5kilo e bike battery like what, 5 Times? and you need to clean it at least twice. I think people can manage. So the purpose of the etap is not defeated
