One-Handed Rising Cut with a Halberd

"Bind onto them from your left toward their right with your blade on theirs and jerk the same out and away from you in an unexpected shove.
Pull quickly back around your head and toward your left.
After you have given your shaft an impetus, release the left hand in this pull around and cut across from below at their head with one hand (from your right toward their left).

Immediately twist your right palm back away from you and recapture your halberd with the [left hand] (which is still moving upward from below).
Afterwards, cut quickly down from above toward their head with both hands, with a step outward.
You should be able to suppress their halberd down with this cut (if they were to thrust at you during this).
Afterwards, thrust quickly in response."
- Fencing Master Joachim Meyer, 1570

Translated by Rebecca Garber

tldr; Beat their halberd aside. Transfer the momentum into a one handed cut from below. Cut back down with two hands to either attack them or suppress their halberd. Thrust at the face for good measure.

Your visual progression from university history professor to medieval master-at-arms who would thrash you in a training bout has been absolutely wild to witness over the last few years.

My man whipped out that charged R2 attack. Truly a fearsome move

A lot of people in the comments seem to misunderstand the purpose of this maneuver. Anytime you move from two handed to one handed you get a surprise amount of reach. The idea here is to carch the enemy by surprise when they think they are out of measure.

As a plus to the move, your opponent can get stunned from how cool it looks!

If I was on a medieval battlefield and saw someone do that, I'd just run. Spinning a halberd like a baton. Have fun, I'll come back when you beat him.

You, kind sir, can’t even imagine how your moves motivate me to get back into properly animating things. I’ll get to it some day

I swear i was meyers student in a past life or something. So many times ive done these techniques in my yard with sticks. I thought i had invented something neat...😢 but it is cool to see the masters did it too.

That is a trick you try once in a fight, because if the other dude isn't on his back foot during that swingaround you're getting poked bad for sure.

It certainly extends the reach. It may work against a retreating opponent.
