First one is the correct one, but the gap is to blocked by providing wooden blck of gap shape or extending and bending the sheet. Box support must be under sheet, wider channel of the sheet to be down and narrow channel to be upward.

There is a spacer sold with that material so you don't have to do that. The screws do go on the upper portion to prevent leaks.

That's why they have closures that stick to the drip edge or gutter apron and expand to close those high spots off to weather and critters of course.
