The difference is not only about hardware & software. There are many proprietary chipset features which can be unlocked by handset manufacturers only by paying additional fee to OEMs. These niche features may not be evident with general usage but they enhance the overall day2day experience. eg: A & M series handset may use the same chipset but A series may unlock the snapdragon chipset feature of fast network switching by latching on multiple bands simultaneously but M series may have this capability locked. Such feature can provide better internet experience during travelling in a high speed vehicle/train.
Similarly there are many paid software licenses which samsung has to pay to original third party vendors. To keep the overall cost of the handset low and to target a certain segment of market, the only option is to cut down cost on these paid licenses which an end user does not really notice.

I believe that it makes more sense to buy the A series phones around 6 months to a year after they are launched when they are available for much better discounts.
