And even today there are still different methods of supporting the net. Some have a frame attached to the goalposts and some have the corners suspended from external posts

The barbed wire crossbar looks like something North Korea would invent

8 feet, by 8 yards. Metric wasnt used in the UK for another 100 years.

Can't understand why it took them more than a decade after fixing the width of the goal post to realize that a cross bar is needed!

Strange that the width given in metric but height given imperial measurements

7.32 meters lmao. Back then England still measured using the imperial system so the ruling was actually to make the goal posts 24 feet apart.

Love when people explain the dimensions of something in 2 separate incompatible measurement systems 🙄

Before that they hung a sheet for the goal and if the goal keeper stopped all the shots he had a clean sheet haha! Love football

Id suggest the distance is marked as 24 FEET. 7.32 is such an arbitrary number and The FA still publish guidlines for goal and pitch sizes in yards and feet.

If anyone is wondering, the reason for the hyperspecific metric width is because the laws were originally written in imperial units (e.g. a football pitch is 100-110 yards long) but when partial metrication became the worldwide standard around the middle of the 20th century, the laws were rewritten to accommodate for this change. So 24 feet (8 yards) became approximately 7.32 meters.

Sad how goal nets are so homogenised at the top level now. I miss the variety we used to see with each club having their own style and patterns of nets.
