So if you haven’t heard, a big splashy revival of Sweeney Todd is headed back to Broadway this spring. And apparently, We’re talking big. They’ve got a 26 person cast, a 27 piece orchestra, and a budget of $14million dollars.
AND they announced that the production would be star Annalee Ashford and Josh Groban. WHAT?!?! So naturally, we’re gonna talk about it. And we’re absolutely going to dream cast it!

When I first heard Josh Groban, I was like "well at least the cast recording will sound nice I guess" but after thinking about it for more than five seconds, I'm actually really excited. Like you said, the idea of Sweeney looking like a normal (maybe even charming guy) and then being so twisted inside could be really beautiful. The casting of the main duo plus the creative team that's already attached makes me feel like this is going to be a STUNNER

Gaten would be FANTASTIC as Toby! I can’t unsee it; he’d nail every scene perfectly for that character!

This production has a lot of potential for multiple Great Comet alums — Amber Gray as Beggar Woman, Denee Benton as Joanna (or Beggar Woman tbh), Lucas Steele as Anthony — I’d be excited for seeing any of them onstage (and reuniting with their Pierre). And Patrick Page was my IMMEDIATE thought for Judge Turpin, so if that rumor is true I am booking tickets ASAP.

I saw Josh Groban (and the rest of the original cast) in Great Comet and trust me, they can make him look at lot older than he is, his hair doesn’t make it too hard😂 in all seriousness, he blew me away as Pierre and can very easily picture him as Sweeney Todd. SO excited to see this revival, and I’m glad a lot of Sondheim musicals are back on Broadway right now

Personally I love the choice of Josh as Todd, I had a friend say “He is too nice to play Todd, he doesn’t look evil or fit the type”. Evil comes from many place in many forms and hides in the shadow of the light, He can start out looking relatively nice and innocent but then as the show progresses he changes his style, hair gets more wild face more gray and covered in shadows with makeup. As the show builds he is becoming what Turpin made him be, that is the moral, a man driven to his ends will do anything for revenge if he perceives he has nothing left to lose, no matter how nice they were, grief and loss bring out the demons.

I have no clue if this would be good or not, but for some reason when you asked for Anthony, my brain was like "What about Ryan McCartan?"

I mean, he has an acting range from JD to Fiyero to Hans, so I wouldn't be surprised if he could do Anthony well. Just playing another character that people can easily fall in love with.

I’m just glad this show is having another revival. It’s time. It’s also time to have a revival that’s different than original intentions or original ideals. Broadway is a commercial business and it is a complicated situation. Buy tickets and go support live theatre!

Would you consider a video about the importance/effect of the age of an actor vs the age of the character? In The Sound of Music, Maria is much younger than Capt. von Trapp but Mary Martin (yes, a huge star) was 46 in the original production, more than ten years older than Theodore Bikel. I saw Bikel play Tevye in a touring company of Fiddler on the Roof. Bikel was in his late 70s at the time; Tevye is probably in his early 40s.

I didn't didn't hear of the revival before this video, that's why I'm subbed, for all that broadway news. We just casted for our high school production of Lion King today, and I got Timon, so found out about 2 casts today-

Josh Groban is not who I see as Sweeney. I really want him to win me over though. AnnaLeigh, I am all about though!. She is such a quirky darling which is perfect for this show! I cannot wait to see who else is cast. I never got to see the off Broadway version back in 2018 so it’s going to be super great to have it back in NYC on Broadway! 🎉😊
